University Heights is known for its quaint cafes and restaurants, each with its own unique flair. El Zarape fits right in. After you pass through the thick antique pine door, you'll notice the care taken in making the interior feel warm and cozy. The low prices belie the wonderful quality of the food and its preparation. In keeping with the tastes of the locals, vegetarian dishes are offered, including a burrito full of steamed veggies. San Diego has gotten used to fish tacos establishments, so the kitchen has become famous for their scallop or salmon burritos. They also feature mole sauce on the house burrito, a Mexican favorite seldom found in little shops.

This was my first time eating at El Zarape in San Diego and I was not satisfied. My vegetarian burrito was horrible. It had burnt beans, hard potatoes and soggy lettuce. It was suppossed to come with the items above and also cheese, salsa fresca, sour cream, and guacamole. I had to get up and ask for my ingredients. For the money I paid for the burrito, $4.50, which is a lot of money for a vegetarian burrito, I thought it would be a bigger and of course have all of the right ingredients in it.
I love Mexican food but will not be eating here again.

I am a native San Diegan of Mexican descent. My father is a fishmonger in Ensenada and throughout Baja California. I have a fairly good idea as to what a fish taco should taste like. The tortilla should be almost too hot to hold, flexible and it should never crack. The fish should be battered and fried to a light brown. You should not be able to taste any strong fishy aftertaste. Next you need shredded cabbage and chopped tomato, and don't be greedy with it either. Finally the Mexican crema.MMMMM! This is why baby jesus invented cows. So cool and slightly tangy. A squeeze of lime, a little of your favorite salsa and you are ready to live. THIS CAN BE FOUND AT EL ZARAPE' FOR 99 CENTS! As for Rubios', they are okay if you don't know any better or if you are afraid to try something new. Essentially, Rubios' is nothing more than a gringo trying to reproduce what he experienced in Baja California. Nice try! Why don't they cook their *&$#$&% tortillas@ Rubios'? While they are worried about investors and bottom lines, El Zarape' will be busy making the best fish tacos San Diego has ever known. El Zarape' is on a gravy train with biscuit wheels if you know what I mean. If you don't try them just once, YOU ARE A FOOL! Buenas Noches.
