Sam Ladeki, founder of San Diego classic dining spots Prime 10 and Roppongi started his namesake pizza chain in 1989. It now extends to Arizona and Nevada, and the gourmet pies continue to rake in fans. Of course, they make classic pizzas with red sauce and traditional toppings, but you'll never grow as a connoisseur if you stick to the basics. Live large with pizzas prepped with garlic-marinated shrimp, sauteed mushrooms and balsamic basil dressing or Thai chicken with cilantro, peanuts, mint and peanut sauce. Asian-influenced tapas are also formidable selections at Sammy's: Order a few like chicken satay, lettuce wraps, barbecue beef quesadillas, lamp chops or oak roasted Portobello instead of an entree, and eat family style with your companions. Always save room for the messy sundae served in a wine glass overflowing with chocolate.
