Multi-ethnic, Vegetarian, Chicken & Seafood - Many Gluten-free choices
Old Wives' Tales has been open since 1980, offering a multi-ethnic menu of vegetarian, chicken and seafood dishes. The extensive menu, including many small plates and a la carte choices, makes it possible to select a range of dining experiences from light meals to multi-course feasts. The restaurant is famous for its Salad Bar and for its Hungarian Mushroom Soup, which is always available on the Soup Bar, along with fresh Clam Chowder and two choices of vegan, gluten-free vegetable soups that change daily. Virtually everything is house-made, emphasizing fresh produce, whole grains, natural chicken and wild seafood. Ingredients are carefully selected to avoid preservatives and other unhealthy additives or "mystery ingredients".

In Short
Old Wives' Tales ranks among Portland's favorite kid spots. It's got a colorful playroom and plenty of dishes to please finicky palates--grilled cheese, noodles with Parmesan and cream, steamed veggies and burritos among them. Vegetarians can rejoice in having choices. In addition to daily specials, much of the lengthy menu is devoted to health-conscious and meat-free dishes. Best bets include Hungarian mushroom soup, spinach and potato omelette, poppy-seed pancakes, guacamole salad and the salad bar.

If the noise coming from the direction of the jungle gym hampers your dining experience, there are seats in the back room.

My visit was strange. I couldn't put a salad together with food I could identify. The food was not edible. The service was barely there and not interested. I fed the kids and myself on the way home, we were starving by then.
Great menu, lousy food, atrocious service.
As a vegetarian, our choices are often limited. I was excited when I saw all the options on the menu. My choice of Spicy African vegetables sounded really great, it wasn't. The menu had a tofu option which I took them up on. Turned out to be a pile of plain steamed tofu on the side, uhh yuck. The rice was well cooked, I'll say that. On to the service, hopefully our 7% tip said it all. Rude, non-attentive, and generally not interested. Well, me too. As far as Old Wives Tales is concerned, I am generally not interested. Great menu, lousy food, atrocious service.
Not impressed
The food here was absolutely terrible and not worth the price. They have a play area for your kids, but your kids have to be SILENT! When we took my daughter here, her and another child were told to be quiet and there wasn't even anyone there. Just a bad overall experience, poor menu selection.
Wow, it's bad!
Just terrible food. It may be creative but it tastes horrible. Avoid at all costs. Healthy does not have to be bad tasting.
