If the words ''liver dumpling soup'' or ''sauerkraut balls'' excite you, you might want to check out one of Milwaukee's most well-known German hot spots. Located just across the street from Usinger's Sausage and Wisconsin Cheese Mart, Mader's is a must stop for out-of-town guests. No doubt they will be impressed with the restaurant's $1 million collection of medieval suits of armor, weapons, stained glass and steins. Even more impressive is the hearty, yet elegant menu. Dishes like the Hungarian style beef goulash, famous towering pork shank -- a favorite for the last 100 years -- or the German sampler, made with Rhine sauerbraten, Wiener schnitzel, Kassler rippchen, beef goulash, potato dumpling, barrel-cured sauerkraut, Bavarian red cabbage and spaetzel, will make any diner gasp with delight. Less adventurous types might want to instead opt for classics like the beer-battered walleye or New York strip steak. Wash it all down with an import lager, dark as the Black Forest, and you'd swear you were at Oktoberfest. An award-winning brunch is served on Sundays from 10:30AM to 2PM.

No doubt about it--Ratzsch's is still better. Mader's is for the tourists and Ratsch's is for the locals.
If You Like German, this is it

Lived up to Billing
I have been going to Maders on and off for over 40 years. I have never experienced anything but excellent fare. There are some dishes (the pork shank) that I think were prepared differently- and bettter in the past but that is not to say it wasn't good.
I think there will always be some fussy diners who have preconcieved notions about what they expect but for good food and ambience, Maders is tough to top.Extremely Disappointing
Extremely Disappointing. Upon entering, everyone in our dinner party commented on the musty smell in the lobby. Kitchen pans were collecting a steady stream of water from the ceiling in the coat-check room. Over-priced with poor service. It took nearly 1.5 hours after ordering to prepare food for a party of 6. All steaks were ordered Medium - one was raw, another was well-done, and side dishes were forgotten. Water & beverages were never refilled. When we expressed our dissatisfaction the hostess blamed us for not allowing more time. Very rude-no apology. Also see TMJ4's Dirty Dining Exposed
