With five locations in the Milwaukee area (plus one in health-conscious Madison), Heinemann's is an example of a chain restaurant that came from a logical chain of events. In 1923, Dorothy and Byron Heinemann were candy makers in downtown Milwaukee who began to offer finger sandwiches to customers. It seemed natural to begin baking their own bread, and eventually, the pair opened a bakery. The restaurants, in turn, were an inevitable offshoot from the instantly popular bakeries, and before long, a family-friendly Milwaukee legend was born. Seniors appreciate the affordable lunch prices for dishes such as the grilled tilapia or the light, crunchy chicken salad. Portions are small, so you'll have room for a slice of grilled coffeecake with a scoop of Heinemann's homemade ice cream.
