With a motto like "happy hunting ground ... for mates, food and drink," you might write off the Big Hunt as another downtown meet market. But this bar located just south of Dupont Circle is many things to many people: a hangout for local college students, a happy-hour destination for nearby office workers, a watering hole for old Mr. Eagan's regulars, and a place where beer lovers can enjoy 27 varieties on tap.
Not to say this place isn't known for its, uh, love connections. The bar takes the hunting theme seriously, right down to the animal-print chairs. Still, there are plenty of things that lure a regular crowd here, including the upstairs pool tables and one of the best jukeboxes in town. On the food front, expect to find your average greasy bar fare -- but you'd be hard-pressed to find another establishment offering Guinness ice cream. (Don't knock it 'til you try it.)
Mostly a laid-back kind of joint with no cover charge, the Big Hunt can get crowded on weekend nights. As parking is becoming increasingly difficult in the lower-Dupont area, opt for a cab or, if you plan to have an early night, Metro it (the Dupont Circle station is only a block away). Just remember to bring your ID. This place is vigilant at carding. --J.E. Coan

Last Saturday night, I had a blast at the Big Hunt. I live in College Park but I'll do what it takes to be a regular there.
