When Jules Maes Saloon first opened back in the late 1800s, it gave the area's factory workers something to do after clocking out: drink. Now, more than 100 years later, it still gives Georgetownians a place to kick up their boots, rack some pool and suck down shots of Wild Turkey. OK, so maybe tattooed punks have taken the place of factory workers, but Georgetown has evolved a lot over the years -- most recently as a funky enclave for artists and bohemians.
The two stages at Jules Maes also make this dive ideal for live shows. From techno and rock to jazz and country, anything goes -- as long as it kicks ass. There's even a huge room entirely dedicated to vintage pinball and video games, where drunken bikers curse at age-old joysticks. Most recently, the owners of Shorty's Coney Island rescued Jules Maes from closing down permanently. Sure, they may have spruced things up a bit (new booths, more alcohol, etc.) but that old 1800s Jules Maes is definitely still here.
