Opening the Harp is a rite of passage for Marquette University students. Saturday and Sunday mornings at 6 AM sharp the creaky doors of the Harp and Shamrock open and partygoers not yet done with their evening crawl in, joining third- shifters at the small, dingy bar. The one-room Harp is a dive, no question about it, but for those still drinking at 6am it's an oasis. A small pool table sits in the back on a slanted floor that growls in annoyance when anyone walks on it. College students and graduates, reliving college craziness, sit at the bar with grizzled veterans of the war against liquor. There's no caste system at the Harp, the customers are joined by a love of Johnny Cash tunes lamenting from the dated jukebox. If you're up to the task, a morning at The Harp and Shamrock goes on your things to do once in life list. -- S.M.

best damn bar ever!
If you are looking to have some alcohol, any bar will do. However, if you are looking for a place that is quiet enough for you to converse with friends, loud enough to satisfy your party needs, has good music on the jukebox, and most of all a place where every bartender makes giving 110% satisfactory service look like a walk in the park, this is the place for you! Prices are good, and the staff, as well as the clientele who frequent this establishment, make it worthwhile making this your main bar. A dive it may be, but in many ways better than the highest class bars, where nobody knows your name.

The Harp & Shamrock is one of the few bars retaining the decor and customers from the days of Marquette's NCAA basketball championship. While the drink prices are decent and the selection admirable, the real draw is the bartending staff brought together by Kirsten and Al Richards - some of the best this former bartender has ever known. These in turn attract a broad range of regulars and those about to become regulars. Students, graduates, and not a few faculty drop in for discussion, friendship, and a sense of community not found elsewhere on or near campus.
