City's Best

1 Union St # B
Boston, MA 02108

Facing the imposing edifice of City Hall, the Purple Shamrock is where Boston civil servants can enjoy their three-martini lunches without having to stumble too far down the Freedom Trail. The Purple Shamrock specializes in comforting Irish and American favorites like shepherd's pie, chicken pot pie, steak, seafood -- and, of course, Boston baked beans. One specialty straight from the old country is bangers and mash, Irish sausage and mashed potatoes. After work and into the night, the Purple Shamrock plays host to a range of bands, drawing a young, energetic crowd; the cover usually runs about $5. A mix of musical styles finds a stage here, from country to rock to folk bands and DJs, so check the schedule if you're picky about your tunes. The Purple Shamrock can get crowded, as it's right around the corner from one of the most popular spots in Boston: Faneuil Hall. Still, good company, good food and good music make the crunch worth your while.

  • Walter rocks!

We were visiting from CA and just happened to drop by one night and met the manager Walter. What an amazing man, he knew so much about Boston and was such a pleasure to talk to. we watched the final Pats game of the year and had a great time! Great food, great staff and great crowd (before the trampy locals start dancing). I would definitley recommend this place...but only till about 10pm...then move on. The nasty hookers humping each other on the floor will make you loose your authentic Irish dinner and the 12 beers you had!

we went there for my friends 21st birthday and we had an awesome time... there were about 12 of us, and we all liked it. no problems at all, we all had fun and danced the whole night... most of the guys were hot and dressed well- very abercrombie & ralph lauren polo type.. just my kind ;-)

  • Sucks and violent staff

This place sucks so bad that when two of my roomates wanted to go there, myself and another dropped them off and went to the Bell in Hand up the street. Later that night I saw a rude bouncer get into an argument with my friend outside and grab and choke him, a guy who hadn't even raised his hands. At that point the bouncers swarmed and just started getting violent grabbing and pushing myself and two other friends in turn and pushing us totally without any provocation.
Then they kept telling us to stop our boy while he was in the middle of the street backing away from a bouncer that kept stepping up to him.
If I wanted treatment like that, I would pay a dominatrix. Go up the street to the Bell in Hand and avoid this meathead crowd.

Thursday nights are without a doubt best spent here. Had the time of my life singing "I Will Survive" with 4 of my girl friends into a live mic up in front of the stage. Another sweet part was winning free beer in the music trivia game! Thank you Randy Newman....
