Longevity says something about an establishment, and there's been a bar in this South Hanover Street location since the 1930s. The current ownership of Mum's has been here for a decade and has created an atmosphere where folks in suits and ties and the tattooed and pierced can mingle. Mum's embraces the concept of a dive bar -- a neighborhood establishment built on good conversation, friendly service and a jukebox boasting something for everyone's musical tastes. Sure, there's the requisite Ravens, Terps and Orioles paraphernalia, floating happy hours with beer specials on Golden Monkey and Harpoon, and plenty of TVs. There's also a self-deprecating humor that both South Baltimore regulars and newcomers appreciate. "No tab without credit card," warns one sign; another cautions, "This is not a frat house," while listing Mum's rules of conduct. Pool tables and video games beckon when you're not camped at a bar that has a feel of the kind you'd like in your club basement. Live music on weekends. Eat elsewhere, though, as the only grub is prepackaged bar snacks.
