As quaint as it is hip, Mugshots might just qualify as the most charming drinking spot to be found anywhere in Austin. The building itself was formerly home to a brothel of which the clientele consisted mainly of grizzled cattle rustler types (and probably more than a few members of the Texas legislature); thankfully, the bar still retains many of the structural nuances of the late 19th century stained glass doors are set into handsome limestone walls (which, if they could talk, would no doubt have very colorful vocabularies). Like its sister tavern, the eternally homey Barflys, Mugshots offers some of the best drink prices in town, the bars unofficial slogan proclaiming that every hour is happy hour. Mugshots caters to a crowd as wildly eclectic as is the jukebox, which itself is filled with everything from Tool to Blondie to Willie Nelson. -- Barrett Brown
