If you want that priceless family heirloom appraised, you don't have to wait for 'Antiques Roadshow' to come to town. Since 1890, Weschler's has appraised and auctioned items as unique and rare as a first edition of Thomas Paine's 1776 'Common Sense' and memorabilia from Gen. Douglas MacArthur. To maintain the integrity of the process, Weschler's, a family-owned and operated business, neither buys nor owns any of the items it sells at auction, instead acting solely as a representative for the buyer or seller.

Weschler's has in-house experts in fine arts, including paintings, drawings, sculpture, photographs and prints; American and European furniture and decorations; 20th-century decorative works of art; rugs, carpets and tapestries; Asian works of art; jewelry and coins; and watches and timepieces.

Weschler's holds specialized sales from September to May, and interested buyers are encouraged to order the catalogs and attend the pre-sale exhibition on the Mondays before the Tuesday auctions. As a courtesy to all customers, Weschler's offers a free appraisal day the first Thursday of the month during business hours. No appointments are needed, and specialists are on hand to offer verbal auction-value estimates of items you think may have value. -- Elisabeth Frater
