  • Go somewhere else!

    Review rating : 1out of 5   jlzatienza - 10/12/2005

I visited on 10/12/05 because of the beauty of the decor. I was struck by the unwelcoming staff and the restaurants unfair dress code. My wife was asked to remove her hat, which she did, but looking around the room, we saw that at least one other woman had a hat on. That was it for us we left without trying the food. If you want to see a beautiful dinning/bar room come here. If you want a welcoming, warm staff go somewhere else!

  • I would think twice...

I made dinner reservations to Mie N Yu about two months prior to going. Upon arriving, my guest and I were directed to a booth in the far corner of what I believe was the "Venetian Room." The booth was very tiny and we were unable to enjoy the decor or aura that I believe the restaurant meant to exhibit. There were more available tables; however, we had asked to change tables twice and each time we were placed in a bad area. We were also placed by the doorway where waiters would go in and out of constantly. In essence, besides being secluded and away from the atmosphere in Mie N Yu, we still had no privacy due to this. We began by ordering an appetizer. It was Smoked Salmon Bruschetta. My guest and I do not eat beef and we were unaware that the salmon was rubbed with pastrami. Upon learning this, we were unable to touch the appetizer afterwards. We each ordered a different version of lamb. I ordered a BBQ Lamb Shank while my guest ordered Garlic and Herb Lamb Loin. My lamb shank tasted like oily and sweet dark meat chicken, while my guest's lamb loin had absolutely no seasoning or taste to it. The portions were of a relatively good size but the food tasted terrible. We have had lamb several times [in other places] and we are accustomed to the vast array of spices they meant to use to showcase flavor; however that was the very thing they lacked. One thing that was more amusing than something to be complained about is the belly dancer they hired. In looks, she did not fit the profile of an exotic belly dancer. It was more along the lines of a potbellied redneck who stripteased for a living. It was an insult to the grace, sensuality, and aura of belly dancing. If you are looking for a beautiful place to go to, this is one; however, I wish you luck on being seated in a good area. If you are looking for good food, I would look someplace else.

I've been there now three times and each time I've had a different meal. The food is good, but the atmosphere is really what makes it worth while. It is expensive and encourages a several course meal, but service is good and design is amazing.

I went to the restaurant once over the summer with a friend and we had a descent time. The waiters were not the best, the food was ok but overpriced. The music was cool though so I decided to plan my bday party there and was told I could reserve one of the rooms for my guest that are flying into town. Well when I went to check out the room the hostesses were rude to me and ignored me. I thought maybe they were just having a bad day so I decided not to deal with them in person and called to reserve a room. The person on the phone was rude and short with me. Come to find out, to reserve a room requires a $2000-$3500 food minimum! To sit in and share a room like the Turkish tent requires a $50 per person food and drink minimum with a contract. And if you just want to show up and not reserve anything they wont seat your party together. I mean, is the restaurant really that prestigious? You can't MAKE people eat $50 worth of food, the tent isnt that fly. 1789, which is more prestigious did not put me through any trouble or have any food minimums.

  • Pretentious Staff

My friends decided to have my birthday brunch at Mie N Yu. I loved the decor and the food but the attitude of the staff completely ruined what would have been an otherwise enjoyable time. It took him forever to get our drinks and then to come back and take down our orders. I guess we weren't in his favored circle of patrons because he was all smiles when a group that was slightly smaller than ours dropped in a half an hour later. I guess it pays to be a regular here.

  • Top Decor & Good Food

    Review rating : 4out of 5   darkflyers - 11/11/2004

The interior is very unique. The food is a 88 out of 100. An obnoxious party came in and it took the wait staff an inordinate amount of time to relocate them to a more appropriate area. Otherwise the wait staff was above average. The prices are high (about 50% overpriced) based on food alone but reasonable when decor is factored into the equation. I would go back for the decor but not the meal price point.

For those bored with the same stuffy DC types - this is the spot. Where else can you ask your waiter for a French Kiss right in front of your spouse?!!
