It's hard to imagine this dingy hole-in-the-wall is actually the same legendary Chinese restaurant that hordes of knowledgeable Washingtonians consider a sacred city gem. But once you taste the Hong-Kong style soup, a steaming tangle of noodles and bulging shrimp dumplings, you'll know you've got the right place. These are authentic Chinese dishes expertly prepared. The flavorful casseroles have inspired national attention and long pilgrimages.

Get there early if you want to taste the delectable roast pork -- it's been known to run out. They don't sell alcohol, but you can buy beer at a nearby market. The inexpensive menu is long, but it will prove more eclectic than typical Chinese takeout fare. Arrive ready to experiment. -- Janice D'Arcy

The oyster casserole is Excellent, you have to be a bit adventurous and you will find delicious selections. If not go somewhere more predictable.

  • The best in town but....

    Review rating : 5out of 5   paoball - 05/21/2007

The best in town but not for the Gen Tsao's chicken crowd. If you're idea of super chinese is great egg roles, chicken lo-mein and being adventuroso is to have Orange Beef.. well this is not your dive. Fine. Don't take up the space and ask the waitress what's better " wine or beer with my egg fo yung"
But if you like good, I mean authentic HK, cantonese cuisine.. this is the closest you can get in Washington DC. Arguably there is better in Vancouver, Toronto or NY but hey.. its Washington.
Stay away if you are looking fancy.. lots of superficial fancy in Chinatown for you to go to.

  • Better Keep It A Secret

    Review rating : 1out of 5   jffrysmit - 02/22/2007

With all the health code violations this place has had, it is better to keep it a secret and not let people know it is safe to eat there. The food is bland and unimaginative. The noodles do not taste fresh or they are poorly made - you choose. DC Chinatown is dead. Any good Chinese restaurant in DC is NOT in Chinatown anymore. They call it Chinatown, but more and more restaurants close here every year. Unfortunately all of the GOOD ones are long gone from this section of town. This place is a sham.

This was the worst Chinese food I've ever eaten. The soup tasted like cornstarch and water, the shrimp tasted spoiled and gritty with sand and the atmosphere was lousy. The staff had the speaker phone on while taking orders. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

  • One of Chinatown's Best

    Review rating : 4out of 5   ouen69 - 09/01/2005

This is one of Chinatown's best kept secrets..the food, service and atmosphere leaves you wondering why this restaurant is not recommended enough. Appearance is deceiving..however the rest makes up for itself..

Very good Chinese food! Much better than your typical place.

Real basic Cantonese Chinese food. Noodle soups to die for. But try a new place, Miu Kee, with more parking and great noodle and seafood dishes. Also try their rice and meat combinations. You'll keep coming back
