Little has changed here since this "world famous" diner opened in 1944. The menu has hardly budged, and it seems some of the staff were present on opening night. Walk in and grab a counter seat or wedge yourself into one of the tiny booths, and the amiable service kicks right in. You can cool off with sweet tea or warm up with fresh coffee as you take in the smells of bacon and hot corn muffins or fried catfish and collard greens, depending on when you arrive. Glance around and you'll see the enormous library of celebrity photos. With the exception of a few members of the current administration, it's mostly a nostalgic wall that seems to fit the place. The line is long at breakfast, but some say the dinner isn't as world famous as it used to be; however, with reasonable prices and generous portions, who could complain? -- Nick Freshman

The Grill is the coolest restaurant in DC. I started eating at the Grill in 2005. Everytime I go there I experience the best service DC has to offer. The dining area is very clean. My favorite things to eat are catfish and Fried Chicken. Ms. Roxie (80+) cooks the best chicken in the world! The best thing about the food is that it is affordable. The most expensive dinner is 14.95. I love it.

Even from a block away, I knew this resaurant would be just what I have been looking for since I moved to DC a year ago.

I was greeted pleasantly as I entered with a menu and told to sit anywhere. As the place was mostly empty, and I was alone I choose one of the six or so empty booths so I could spread out with my paper. A quick look at the menu confirmed my hopes that this was what I had been looking for. The menu was perfect.
The restaurant continued to empty as I wait and waited to be served. After ten minutes or so, I heard one waitress tell another that there was someone waiting to be served. Still I was ignored. After about 20 mins. of not being served, three fellows entered, sat down and were immediately approached and served!
I got up and left and as I exited the same polite hostesse wished me a good day. I have no I idea what I did to deserve such treatment.
    So disappointed.

  • Stanky Wanky

Words cannot explain the smell that hit me when I walked through the door. In addition, besides the man working the cash register, the service was pretty bad. However, it was kind of late and the waitresses were old and tired. I think they need to retire and hire some new and young employees. Furthermore, the food was not that great either. I ordered fried chicken and she went to the back and put some leftover, soggy chicken in my togo box. When I asked if I could have some fresh fried chicken, she said that they do not fry chicken for each order, but that they pre-cook it early in the day. How terrible is that. KFC had better and crispier chick than they did. So I ended up ordering catfish, which cost $3 more, in order to get some freshly cooked meat. As for my sides, yams and macaroni & cheese; hated it. The macaroni tasted like it had velveta cheese in it with chedder cheese on top; what happened to the homemade mac n cheese. The yams had too much sugar or syrup or something, but were not as bad as mac n cheese. Finally, that was my first and final trip unfortunately.

I grew up in DC in the late 50's, walking distance to Florida Ave Grill,,,,,,,, then as I grew up and was clubbing that was the place to go in the AM to throw down,,,,, people complain about how a place look and the smells but one never knows a thing about the food we put in our mouths, we don't know the cooks , I say that to say just a few weeks ago there was a resturant in NY a upscale place ,and the cost to eat there was costly, and found out it was full of rodents & it was closed, we take chances everyday of our lives, Florida ave Grill is History to washington dc just like Ben's chili Bowl, I don't ever recall the staff at Fla Ave Grill to ever be rude or ignore anymore,,,,,,always friendly , Fla Ave Grill still standing and serving ,,,,,, HOLLA

I HAVE FRIENDS AND FAMILY WHO COME TO VISIT THAT WANT TO GO THERE BEFORE GOING TO MY HOME. THE FOOD IS AWESOME ,ESPECIALLY THE BREAKFAST AND THE BEEF SHORTRIBS FOR LUNCH / DINNER .

This plcae looks and smells like they don't clean up. The service is the worst and the floors are always sticky. What's that smell that hit you when you walk in. Are they serving chittlings?

It was horrible. The staff didn't even say good morning when spoken to when we walked in. Then we had to wait in silence for at least 5 minutes before or presence was acknowledged (and we were the only ones there!). The food sucked and the coffee tasted like it was brewed on Tuesday (and we were there on a Friday). Extremely disappointing...my stomach is very angry at me!
