After decades of neglect, National Community Church transformed this run-down onetime diner into a not-so-shabby neighborhood coffeehouse. Built in 1908, the itty bitty eatery served "butter and eggs" to railway travelers passing through Union Station. The original petite brick building still hugs the corner at 2nd and F Streets, and its makeover has added new space, including a basement nook that's also used for community events.

Perhaps best of all, the coffee is served with a cause -- Fair Trade, shade-grown beans, certified organic (or transitional organic) that support sustainable growth and help small farmers in poor countries. Service is friendly in the coppery and Earth-toned interior where neighbors pop in with four-legged friends and hipster coffee zealots commune. If coffee isn't your cup of tea, adopt a muffin and sip freshly steeped teas instead. The coffeehouse atmosphere is always abuzz, but there's plenty of room for newshounds and bookworms too.

This place has the right stuff. Everything I've tried so far has been super- including the spiced chai, mocha, hot apple cider.. mm-mmm. The events are fun- poet-a-tete, concerts now and again. It's a great little local coffeehouse.

Visually a nice place, seeing as it is brand new. Looks like a lot of money went into this place but not enough into training their employees about the coffee they are selling. It is Fair Trade and Certified, as is most coffee in any self respecting shop, but it's the knowledge of the coffee that I found to be lacking. I am not a coffee guru or some single-origin bean connoisseur that can pinpoint some flavor note from the dirt of a Sumatran but I can tell when some has NO idea about their product. But again, the coffee did speak for itself and was satisfactory. Not sure if I'd ever make it my daily coffee shop (even though I live in the area) but it’s nice. Also wish it was a little bigger and slightly more comfortable. Maybe some couches?
