  • GOOD PLACE

I've eaten there several times. The wait staff is very nice and the food selection is good and price-wise reasonable; a lot of food for what you pay. The beer selection is excellent and the calamari and shrimp is EXCELLENT

  • Underwhelmed

    Review rating : 1out of 5   lfryett1 - 04/26/2007

How this restaurant is on DC's top eateries lists year after year is beyond me. I've ate there twice now and was disappointed with the quality of service (several of waitstaff and the hostesses had all the warmth and charm of a door knob). When you pay good money to eat out, you deserve excellent service. Secondly, the food and drinks were average or below average, absolutely nothing spectacular given the prices.

  • Not a bargain, but excellent

My husband and I had a lovely meal at CG's last weekend, on our way to theater. I had a great shrimp and grits dish and was delighted with it. It was as good as anything I've had in high-end Southern restaurants in Savannah and elsewhere. The atomosphere is busy, but we had a booth and enjoyed an intimate meal. The service was outstanding and the martini not bad either. While the prices aren't cheap, they are not stratospheric nor are they out of line for being in downtown DC.

  • Overpriced and Under the top

    Review rating : 1out of 5   ingaindc - 03/01/2007

My husband and I slipped in to CG's one evening. All I wanted was a good burger ( which they were supposed to have) and a cool drink. We began with the calamari which was fine , it was wayyyyyyyyyyyyy overpriced ( OLD EBBIT has it for around $9 and it is devine. Then, our waiter whom NEVER said his name took our order. The burger came and it was GREASY!!!!.. I had to ask for lettuce.... a burger with no lettuce? So, I had a tiny greasy burger...............
The no name server sucked..... he never refilled my glass with water. Never asked how things were during the meal. At the end, when he was handed us the bill he as asked how everything "was" ? We told him " IT SUCKED".......
Pardon me, but he laughed , took our credit card and went on with his CHEF GEOFF business.
Well, that was the first and last time for them.. Seriously, next time I will wait at the EBBIT.......

  • Overpriced, overhyped

    Review rating : 2out of 5   ari1775 - 02/06/2005

I invited 8 of my friends to join me downtown at Chef Geoff's, because I'd read a few positive reviews. Well, it might be ok for brunch, but for dinner, it was totally overpriced - the special (fish) was $24!!! I'm sorry, but come on - this restaurant is pulling one over on people. It is nothing more than a run-of-the-mill restaurant, and that dish shouldn't have cost more that $15. The truth is, none of my friends enjoyed their meals. I was embarrassed. And one more thing - the server was friendly but incompetent.

  • Not a good experience

    Review rating : 1out of 5   equityrc - 01/11/2005

It must have been a bad night at Chef Geoff's Downtown. I was really looking forward to trying this resturant for the 1st time During Restuarnt Week. Once I was seated, no one approached my table for 10 minutes. Then the manager had to come and tell me my waiter would be by in a few minutes. She was nice. I orderd the Garlic Ceaser salad - not a good choose. The lettuce was drenched in dressing and parmisan cheese. The I had a strip steak, mashed potatos and grilled aparagus. The strak was good and cooked to my liking but the mashed p's were bland. I could have made that same dish right at home. Nothing at all special about it. The dessert was the double chocolate mousse which was good, but it was served with a regular bland vanilla ice cream and super sweet whipped cream (that did not seem to have been home made) then had some candied nuts. An odd combo. I had hoped for a special meal with unique touches. I did not get that at all. The waiter was nice but seemed a bit lost and rushed.

  • Best restaurant downtown

    Review rating : 5out of 5   mikemonllc - 06/05/2004

On our fourth visit to the restaurant, the service and food has definitely become extremely sharp. In the first three times, service & food were great, but small things could have been better. It seems as Chef Geoff's has its game face on and everyone from the greeting host to the smiling busboy made our anniversary dinner very memorable. The bar was quite crowded but luckily the noise didn't bother us. A few extra laughs just made me think my jokes were funny. This place has really proven itself in only two years...

  • Run AWAY from Chef Geoff's

    Review rating : 0out of 5   edwards131 - 02/22/2004

Located across the street from Warner Theater, Chef Geoff's is a convenient place to dine prior to, or after, a show. Convenience is its only advantage. On this, our second visit, the problems we encountered on our first visit several months ago were still prevelant.
    1. Reservation missing. Notes on the margin do not a reservation make. Nor did it matter that we called ahead a day prior to make a reservation. Our name wasn't in the scrawl Geoff's calls a reservation book.
    2. Poor service. The staff is young and untrained. Age doesn't matter as long as the staff is trained. Examples. The runners that bring the food to the table didn't get the right food in front of the right guests once. Salads were improperly placed as were the main meals. Not a problem if the runner would wait to ensure his placement was correct, they didn't. The food was plopped down and off they went. The bread basket, I would believe should come with the salad, arrived halfway through the meal.
    3. Bad Food. Bad service can be overcome with good food. To bad Geoff's didn't strike a mark here either. A special for the evening was Baked Cornish Game Hen served on a bed of pasta. The hen was fatty amd served on a bed of doughy pasta. All in all is was just bad.
I will search out other restaurants in the National Theater/Warner theater area but Chef Geoff's will never get my business again.
