If you've lived in San Francisco for more than five years -- or if you prefer classic over trendy -- you might take issue with the redesigned Redwood Room. The spot in its previous incarnation, with floor-to-ceiling redwood- paneled walls and giant Klimt prints, was stately rather than flashy, a quiet place, since 1933, for a convenient pre-theater drink.
Enter Ian Shraeger, the man behind Studio 54 and a chain of boutique hotels. With postmodern designer Philippe Starck, Shraeger made history of the Klimts in favor of "living portraits" -- flat-screen projections that disarmingly blink their eyes and breathe. Starck and Schraeger kept the majestic walls, however, and added an amazing backlit panel of glass and liquor bottles that glows a warm yellow behind the bar. The result is a sleek but still breathtaking creation.
The crowd has also morphed: Patrons are younger, and the piano player has been replaced with trance-music DJs. The atmosphere recalls chic spots of New York and Los Angeles, as do the clientele and the prices. If you're feeling flush, it's worth it to kick back in Starck-designed chairs with a nice glass of bubbly and ogle the beautiful surroundings.

boring, overpriced and dull
The redroom in itself is a very nice space. The staff is well dressed and professional. If you dont have a reservation for a table...you pretty much dont exist. I went because a friend from out of town wanted to go to a place to be "seen". Im a local and wouldnt go back if the drinks were free. The drinks although generous are overpriced. I think the reason they are so generous is that there are so many wanna be crowdint the bar it takes way too long to get back to the bar to get a drink. The graphics are pretty unique but they should have used more attractive models.

The Redwood Room is fabulous, although I might have preferred it in its more contemplative Klimt incarnation...but then, I'm not among its younger patrons.
Some friends and I met there in August 2005 while visiting San Francisco, and found the ambience a bit noisy to converse there, so we asked if we could sit somewhere more quiet. Our fantastic waitress suggested the hotel's lobby. We had just sat down with our pricey wines when a couple of children (under 10) demanded to know why we were there. ( Well, we wanted to know what THEY were doing there after midnight! ) The kids slipped away to be replaced by a security heavy, who unceremoniously threw us out under threat of police arrest when I explained to him that we had been directed there by the waitress! $100 worth of drinks left on the table, we had to walk back to our hotel through the unsavory Tenderloin neighborhood. That was our first and guaranteed last experience with the Redwood Room...not the fault of the bar or its staff, but the staff of the hotel (was it the Clift?) was way out of line!
I'm spreading the word anywhere and everywhere I can. Redwood Room is great but noisy, I would have rated it higher if the hotel it's in wasn't the most inhospitable place I've ever experienced in my life.
The experience was so distasteful, it has altered any future plans we may have had to visit the City again...our friends will have to come and visit us here in friendly Mendocino instead, where hotel managers welcome our business, and it costs less.phreaky photos!
an excellent place for the younger crowd. great ambiance, drinks are fine. pictures on the wall provide for great ice breakers. pretty crowded on the weekends. good luck finding a place to sit down. better cozy up next to the cutie at the bar!

This is a great place to have a drink. The atmoshere is sophisticated and the service was great. The only problem is that it was crowded and the neighborhood is seedy. Located in the Tenderloin with tons of homeless begging for money. Watch yourself in this area!!!!
