Editorial Review
by Joanna Currier
Fun, flirtatious restaurant and wine bar with distinctive Californian appeal.

The Scene
The attractive street-level dining room is busy with tourists, shoppers, and yes, first dates. A low, tin ceiling and tinted windows deepen the room's wine-red walls and accents. Hand-thrown, eggshell-hued dishes in irregular shapes add touches of whimsy to crisp, white-topped tables. Service is smart, efficient, and patient with the exclusively California wine list. A small, back bar upstairs accommodates after-work oenophiles, while downstairs a larger, cavernous wine "grotto" lures private groups.

The Food
The menu of simple California favorites is divided into small and large plates. Appetizers are fresh, colorful and presented like gifts--"Crush" oysters served warm with bacon and chard, and sashimi of tuna crudo with green olive tapenade. Larger dishes include pan-roasted chicken breast, diver scallops with a cauliflower puree and grilled rack of lamb with cranberry beans, pearl onions and glazed radishes, all with sweet, tangy sauces and reductions.

Food was bland. If you're from the city, you'll hate this place. Overpriced and boring. The worst part was the bland food and the price.

I thought the food and the Wine flights were the best. The staff is so helpful and the live music adds a flavor that helps make the food melt in your mouth. Can't wait to return!!!!

The wine is fine, but my steak was seriously overcooked. Our waiter was apparently just learning--service was not good. The food was mediocre---perhaps because this was a Sunday night and the regulars were off. We were deeply disappointed. Aug 03

First Crush is my favorite restaurant and wine bar. I am desperate to go back to San Francisco just so I can go back to First Crush. The Food the Wine the Service are all exceptional. I have a "First Crush" on the this fabulous place.
    Please don't change a thing.
