It's small, it's always mobbed, it serves melted-cheese-intensive Tex-Mex grub and has about a dozen different kinds of margaritas. Sounds like fun, but it doesn't exactly sound unique, right? In Hoboken, the Mile Square Frat Party, places like East LA are a dime a dozen. And although not all of them offer as solid (if not exactly muy authentic) burritos, tacos and occasionally amazing frozen margaritas (go ahead and experiment, or stick with the basic lime, which rocks), that still doesn't stop a youngish crowd from packing it to the rafters. So what is everyone so excited about? Could be the huevos rancheros, a hearty breakfast staple that's like Tijuana comfort food. -- D.J. Roth

DO NOT GO TO EAST LA UNLESS YOU WANT ROACHES IN YOUR FOOD!! There was group of us girls out for a nite of fun but instead we had roaches! When we were done eating we saw about 3 roaches on the wall crawling right next to our table!! I showed it to the bust boy & he said "yeah i see it" I proceeded to ask him for the manager but no one ever came. Then I approached our waiter named George and told him the situation and he said "well now u know what it's like to be in East LA" I told him it wasn't a time to joke it was a serious matter, again I asked for the manager. He said they've had that problem for years now soo then George pointed at an older woman maybe late 30's or 40's with blondish hair. I was trying to explain the situation and she was just plain rude she was inputting information into the computer and was not looking at me while I was speaking to her. She said there was no manager and I said well then who is in charge? She said no one really? And I go so what do you do if you have a problem? How can you run an establishment on a Friday night with no manager? Then she had the audacity to say "are you serious? u you never seen roaches in a restaurant before? Outraged I said NOO are you serious acting like that is normal? And she said "are you serious you never seen roaches in a restaurant in hoboken? And so I said I can't believe you are serious because we live in the US where there are health codes and regulations to abide to and she just walked off and completely ignored me!! Later on I found out through a friend that that lady was the manager and that George is kind of an assistant manager! They lied to me said there was no manager to avoid the problem! Whoever the owner of this rest is I suggest hiring a professional staff who has managerial experience & doesn't avoid problems & fix your roach problem! DIGUSTING!!! Spread the word tell every1 NOT TO GO THERE!!!

  • Decible level is unbearable!

I made the trip to East LA, and I was literally blown away by the noise level in that tiny restaurant! The music was beyond loud, the patrons, including many little children seemed to be all talking, and screaming at once. I had to yell to my date across the table, which did nothing to improve his opinion, or his mood!

I, being an old devotee of Tex-Mex, having had the best of it in Arizona, California, and Texas, was not overly impressed by the enchiladas, rice & beans. I would score it at a 6 on a scale of 10. My date did like the shrimp fajitas, so my recomendation was justified. The margaritas were the real deal.

I have to give full credit to the wait staff, as they were very efficient, friendly, and even tried to get the music down to a reasonable level. They were excellent, and were tipped accordingly.

Overall, I am a purist, and prefer my mexican cuisine from the place it originated. No contest.

Last Saturday we had the most horrific experience here...roaches came walking across the table. I understand that sometimes things happen, but overall the restaurant (and what I could see of the kitchen) were pretty nasty. The staff seemed unphased by the incident, and offered to pay for a round of drinks. We said no thank you, and proceeded to leave. I vowed to tell as many people as I could to never eat here again!

  • East LA In Name Only

this restuarant has a great vibe, and what looks like a fantastic menu. However, for those in the know, who know what REAL east LA mexican food tastes like, you will have to keep on searching for that resturant which will deliver the goods. This place is certainly not up to snuff. Unless you like anglocized versions of your mexian food and not the real deal.
