This new concept has already become the most-talked-about opening in Montclair in quite the while, for reasons both pro and con. First off, we'll say this: it's an awfully handsome space, with solid wooden family-style tables in tall front windows and a more intimate bar area in back. Dcor runs to big murals. There's also a courtyard out back, and the holy grail of Montclair dining: free parking. One key gimmick here that hits you right off the bat is the sangria menu. It holds a dozen different variations, from an almost cloyingly sweet version of the classic red-plus-fruit standard, to far more adventurous (mojito and banana) takes. Among the delightful tapas and appetizers are fried bits of goat cheese, empanadas, stuffed peppers, little cuts of pork belly, some addictively crunchy chicken 'lollipops' and sassy garlic shrimp. Entrees are less daring, but do range from Latin (pork) to surprising Caribbean items (oxtail, snapper). Here's hoping the service kinks get worked out, fast.

  • Cuban Pete Go Back to Staten Island

    Review rating : 1out of 5   RisaBar2 - 09/27/2009

Last night 8 friends were told to wait an hour for a table and stand in a tight hallway with customers, waiters, hostesses, etc. Then, we were told it would probably be another hour! When we expressed shock, the owner told us too bad and was rude and obnoxious. I have eaten here before and the food is nothing great, but on a nice ********* fun to eat outside. After being shouted at by the owner and told "too bad" we left. Montclair has great restaurants that have it all - good food, ambience and nice people. Don't waste time on this dump.

  • Food good-owner /manager stinks

The owner hawks his lousy sangria and gets angry if you don't buy it- especially if you bring your own. He has a wacky story about his arrest stemming form BYOB but that's bullcrap.Last time I was there I said no to sangria and the waiter alerted the owner who came over to say we could not use our wine unless we bought the sangria to mix with it. The waiter said we couldn't order tapas without ordering entrees.I felt like they were trying to milk every last $$ out of us- very distasteful and I have been a regular customer .The food is good but I am not sure that I will be back.

The owner treated my party like s#*t. You can do much better going to a restaurant in Hudson County for real Cuban food. He should be ashamed of himself. No Cuban person in their right mind would ever treat a person the way my party was treated. I will never go there again and hope that if you are reading this you will do the same.

  • WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!

    Review rating : 1out of 5   M Daphne4969 - 02/21/2009

I feel compelled to say that this was simply THE WORST dining experience I have ever had. Six friends and I went for dinner on a friday night, the food was below average and the dinner service was poor but the most outrageous thing were the busboys who repeatedly removed plates of food while food was still being eaten, slopped beverages around, made rude faces and gestures and refused requests for more drinks, etc. When one particularly unpleasant person poured our wine (THAT WE BROUGHT) into a communal slop bucket and was told to stop and refused to we called over the owner. At this point he shrugged his shoulders and said the busboy didn't speak English and then wandered off. We told him in a low voice that we would never again patronize this establishment. The owner then started berating our group for being racists. Not only was this place atrocious, I think that the owner should be incarcerated. (again)

  • First Timer - Great Experience

    Review rating : 5out of 5   XBookworm2x - 02/15/2009

The setting is perfect, the mood is light and festive, the food is wonderful and fabulous, the service is incredible! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes Cuban food or has never tried it. It's a great place to go and the sangria is off the hook! It was my first time there and the servers and owner treated us like we were regulars. Unfortunately, I went during the winter so I haven't experienced the outdoor dining but with the waterfall built right outside, I'm sure it's lovely at night. GO THERE!!!
