554 Bloomfield Ave
Montclair, NJ 07042
This contemporary restaurant fills what seems to be another revolving storefront on Bloomfield Ave. But there isn't anything blue about BLU. With soft tones of brown, yellow and brick red, the dim lighting fires off the scent of a New England ski lodge dining hall. Created, owned and manned by landmark Chef Zod Arifai (former owner of Jasmine's in Lyndhurst) the goal is to create a chic cosmopolitan bistro without the chilling affects of one. Efforts are admirable, but difficult to accept with those back-stiffening, rear-flattening chairs. The menu focuses a modern American approach with Chef Arifai's meticulous style of French techniques in the kitchen, which coddles its creations through slow-cooking and searing. BLU adapts its menu to the season, but banks itself around the cod dishes and butter-like beef ribs which slide off the bone after five hours of cooking.

Happy to have Zod in Montclair
We tried Blu a few weeks ago and we love it! We loved Zod's cooking at Jasmine and didn't know that Blu was his. We found the food to be delectable & imaginative. The decor was minimalist yet cozy. The service was efficient, personable, knowledgeable, and friendly. We will be regulars there now.

Although nicely decorated we were extremely disappointed at Blu. The service was very poor and slow. With portions not fit to feed a five year old it was rather disappointing to hear that they ran out of bread after inquiring after 30 minutes of waiting to have our order taken.
Although pricey, the food, minuscule in portion and short on selection was not bad.....but certainly nothing special.
Skip this one, you wont miss much.
