According to the Port Jefferson Historical Society, the Elk Street Grille is located on the former site of Effingham Tuthill's, which ''produced three times as many carriages as any other New York area competitor,'' proving that traffic snarls along Main Street were not just a byproduct of the invention of the automobile. As for the restaurant, while elk is not on the menu (the site became the Elk's Hotel in 1920, a Port Jeff historical landmark), there is a diverse selection of New American entrees that covers most of the bases: seafood like salmon, sole and tuna; poultry from chicken to duck; and red meat including lamb, pork and steak. The restaurant's unassuming yet classy decor gives it a cozy charm. A piano player tickles the ivories during the week, and weekends feature live jazz. Sunday brunch begins promptly at noon. And although they'll likely accommodate you if you arrive by horse and buggy, it's probably best to drive and park.

Whether or not your destination is Port Jefferson, make a point of getting to this restaurant. It is better than it has ever been. New Chef and menu. Great stuff. Great staff. Traditionally spot on, yet they manage to mix it up with theme dinners (Tuscany, Carribean, etc). Murder Mystery dinners and so on.

The music is better. Not as loud as it was. It fits nicely now.

Oh, check the wine list too. Much improved.

It's a "must go to" now...
