City's Best

2100 Fairmount Ave
Philadelphia, PA 19130

The location might be directly across from the Eastern State Penitentiary, but inside, filling many of the comfortable looking couches and plush chairs, you'll see much of the typical java joint clientele: students enjoying the free Wi-Fi connection on their laptops; professional types mainlining some pick-me-up before heading out to the office; stay-at-home parents taking their kids out for a treat, and so forth.

In addition to all the standard coffee and juice fare, you will also find a variety of soy smoothies such as the Grasshopper (banana, chocolate and mint syrup), and a food menu that offers a fine array of possibilities with an emphasis on vegetarian eats. Egg and bagel sandwiches, faux chicken salad wraps or a colorful cheese quesadilla purport to be solid bets, but most intriguingly, you can order the Jailhouse Rock, an Elvis-inspired dish which involves a vastly more healthy variation of the King's fave sandwich, organic peanut butter and banana with local honey on open-faced multi-grain bread.

Today was my first time visiting this jem, and I absolutely loved it! Great food and great coffee. Gotta love the whole free trade thing too. Hats off to management for hiring really sweet people. I had a hard time making up my mind and the staff was very helpful. I will be returning.

If you don't stop in , well, the title says it all.
First of all, this place is an Organic and Free Trade Business which is a great business philosophy. (look it up)
That's all backed up with coffee done just right, recovery shakes that are soul-soothing and some very addictive culinary treats.
My favorite sandwiches are the Capone and the Machine Gun Kelly. You'll find your favorite, I guarantee it.
A nice shop, a friendly crowd, and a staff that is courteous and from what I've seen, work hard to please.
You can also sit outside if you like!

  • Terrible Service

The coffee is good, the sandwiches are interesting, and the setting is really nice. I just wish they didn't make you wait 45 minutes (literally) for a bagel with cream cheese. I gave up ordering any food at all, and then had to wait 20 minutes for a smoothie.

The workers don't have a great attitude either. They could be nicer and not act like they are so much better than you.

This is probably the best coffee place I've ever been too. Wonderful atmosphere, great food, all natural and whatnot, LOVE IT!
