Although its menu changed in the summer of 2003, the New Wave Cafe is still the friendly, sports-inspired place it's always been. The new culinary roster, however, refutes the spot's reputation as a place to drink while waiting for your table to be ready at Dmitri's down the block: New Wave Cafe has become a destination in and of itself. There's less emphasis on bar food and an edgier tone to the menu. In addition to intriguing entrees (cinnamon-crusted pork tenderloin with apples, orange-and-garlic-grilled steak, and peppered short ribs with walnut mashed potatoes, among others), whole new sections have been added. Opt for savory vegetable chips with Gorgonzola; fire-roasted pepper and chickpea dip, or crispy oysters with remoulade from the Tastings menu. If you're feeling less adventurous, grab a pie from the grilled pizza menu, with topping combos such as roasted duck, caramelized onion, apple and mushrooms; provolone, tomato ragout and basil; or arugula, prosciutto, tomatoes and three cheeses. You can, of course, revert to the old comforting standby: New Wave still boasts a big, fat, juicy burger.

Lose the attitude
If any restaurant benefits from "location, location, location", it has to be this one. The service and attitude is so BAD that it's clear they're not for want of customers simply because of where they're located.
For a spectacular food and wonderful service, try DIMITRI's across the street (though bring your own drinks because it's BYOB).
Instead, the food at New Wave is TERRIBLE (unless you're totally drunk which it seems most of the patrons must be). Also, every single one of the waitresses acts as if we should be thankful that they're serving us.
I couldn't believe how ornery and nasty these people were. I asked for an extra bit of salad dressing and they acted as if I'd stolen their child (which, by the looks of them, would be the last thing in the world I'd want).
Please, if you don't like your job and want to push that on customers, find something other than waitering. And someone tell that bartender chick with the dreadlocks that her look went out in the early 90s.
Clearly, it starts from the top. The owner is quite old and oblivious to how his staff is treating customers.Comments(0)|Add CommentI love New wave!!! Good bar, good food, good people :)
New wave is that bar where they always know your name, sit at the bar and the owner might just ask how work has been and why he hasn't seen you in over a week.
Love the atmosphere any night of the week for drinks, and come for lunch all of the time with my co-workers, we love the salads on the menu (Isabella Salad is the love of my life!)WORST SLOP I 'VE EVER EATEN!
LEAVE YOUR ANIMAL AT HOME BECUASE THEY TREAT YOU LIKE A BUNCH OF PIGS... FOOD WAS LIKE SLOP! AND 3 OUT OF 5 DINNERS WERE WRONG. THE WAITRESS WAS RUDE AND ARGUMENTITIVE! SERVICE WAS SLOW AND ALMOST EXTINCT ! WRONG AND COLD FOOD WAS DELIVERED TO THE TABLE!. IF YOU ARE USE TO SERVICE WITH A SMILE AND GOOD FOOD GO TO MCDONALDS!
I AM OUT TO DINNER 5 OUT OF 7 NIGHTS A WEEK... AND THAT WAS BY FAR THE WORST DINNER AND EXPENSIVE IN MY LIFE!the menu
I love the New Wave. I've been going there since I moved to Philly 4 years ago... one of my favorite places. However, I am distraught (forgive the drama) about the menu changes. When the new chef came in, I loved the changes. Pickles with the burgers are a HUGE improvement, but then I fell in love with a tomato, basil mozz sandwich. On my next visit, I found out it was off the menu. Ok, so I found something new to love - the shrimp po' boy. Well, after several return trips I have just been informed that my newest beloved sandwich is OFF THE MENU. Please stop making changes and bring back the pod' boy. Thank you!
