Want a challenge? Here's one. Actually, two.

First, break out of your normal Plaza-Westport nightlife rut and head to the oft-neglected downtown of North Kansas City. Second, walk into the sleek confines of Kelso's and try to order a martini that they can't make. Go ahead, try. According to the co-owner, former Major League Baseball player Jeff Kelso, the bar is outfitted with the goods to make more than 100 types of martinis. You might have better luck facing Kelso on the diamond.

Everything seems to gleam seductively inside Kelso's: the stylish red lamps, the angular black tables and booths, the marble-topped bar. A black and crimson color scheme and framed deco-era posters of European advertisements complete the sophisticated feel. But don't be put off by the display. Kelso's clientele is anything but snooty. Clustered at the bar and wedged into the tall booths you'll find a range of humanity that defies simple categorization: aging hippies, college girls, after-work buddies, older couples, career alcoholics and a slew of well-heeled professionals. Some come for the martinis, beer and wine. Others come for the menu of upscale pizzas, sandwiches and bar food. But all are clearly welcome. -- Seth Sherwood
