Cold beer and hot rock intersect at the Hi-Dive, a small but storied spot for live music. The club's usual crowd is composed of Denver's young punks, dorks, DJs, scenesters and boozehounds -- big fans all of its nightly schedule of local and national indie rock shows, dance nights, weekly screenings of cult films and cheapo drink specials.

For nearly 20 years, the location had been at the heart of the local punk scene as Seven South; in 2000, it was sold and refashioned as a hippie club. Three years later, it changed ownership again, this time to Matt and Allison LaBarge, who recently relocated from New York City (Matt is a Denver native). The new owners refashioned the name, look and sound, infusing the space with a bohemian spirit that owes as much to the old Seven South as it does to Brooklynite hip.

The jukebox at the Hi-Dive is one of the most cutting-edge in Denver, compiling seminal records from outfits like The Clash, The Attractions and The Modern Lovers with today's very latest monsters of college rock. Next door is Sputnik, an arty lounge under the same ownership.
