Tony Cheng has brought crowds to Chinatown for more than 20 years. His personal flair and business savvy have made him a mainstay in Washington, and with kitchens that seem to back up the bravado, his restaurants do well. Such is the case with his Chinese seafood restaurant. Stacked on top of his Mongolian Barbecue restaurant, the dining room and menu match Cheng's personality -- enormous and occasionally overdone. Giant holding tanks are on display with Dungeness crabs and lobsters battling for position, and traditional Asian art is featured throughout the expansive space.
Cheng is known for his long menus, so "seafood" is a limiting label. There are the traditionally spicy and hearty meat dishes of Szechuan, as well as an array of more delicate seafood offerings from Canton. The menu can be dizzying in its length, so opt for the dim sum that's offered every day for lunch -- there is an endless variety, and the price is reasonable. At dinner, you're on your own with the menu. Your best bet might be to look around at the tables and see what the locals are having. A few ideas: stir-fried lobster, crispy snapper or beef with oyster sauce. -- Nick Freshman

Tony Cheng Monopolized Chinatown from Good to Poor
Tony Cheng has 2 different restaurants that cater to 4 market niches with 4 product lines. 7 days a week they serve Dim Sum upstairs from 11a -3pm. On M-F it's downright awful but Sat & Sun from 11am-2pm it's 2nd best in the entire DC Metro region & very inexpensive. Mongolian BBQ is good & inexpensive. Their ala carte lunch in dinner menu is unreliable, caveat emptor & grossly over-priced. The lunch buffet is worse but caters to shallow pockets & tremendous gluttony. There's much better for less $$$.

Well let's see. If you are Tony Cheng and you buy up all the other competition and keep those buildings closed or convert them to other uses than a restaurant..... then, yes,.... Tony Cheng's is a "great" Chinese restaurant. Truth be told folks there used to be at least a dozen or more GREAT Chinese restaurants in China Town, DC. Tony bought them out and closed them down.... Now his is the "best" of one. Good job Tony!
You still hungry, tourist scum ??
right there , right there by the Metro, beautiful and convenient, esp in a thunderstorm......cross the street and you're inside....
go upstairs and get dim sum, great wonton soup, and wonderful foods of all sorts, not to mention seafood items, fresh and delicious......
you think they charge too much, fly to Hong Kong, fool, and see how much that costs you.......great service, waiters with a sense of humor......chineese atmosphere, but the silverware is really only stainless steel, however, napkins are linen and all is clean.......great place to be, if you have to be in DC....All-Time Favorite
This has been my favorite restaurant since I was a little girl. The Mongolian BBQ is as far as I've made it (I haven't made it upstairs for seafood yet), but it seems to get better every time I'm there. The wait staff is friendly and efficient, and the food is superb. The only problem with it is finding parking.
Mediocre
The mongolian barbecue fare is limited, no seafood. Shrimp is even an extra $2.95 per bowl. Too expensive for what you get. There are a lot better Mongolian restaurants around.
