Those who lunch at R&G Lounge (half the Financial District and much of Chinatown, apparently) think of it as a loud and bustling basement where you can grab supercheap rice plates like salt-and-pepper crab (the house special) and clay pot seafood. Those who've had the full dinner remember a quiet feast in a pleasant, airy upstairs dining room. R&G is best for banquets, so go with a group. Not everything on the menu is done well -- some dishes seem muddled, some flabby -- but this is one Chinatown banquet house where you don't need to speak Cantonese to understand the menu, and the polite staff is happy to steer you toward the good stuff.
Best Bets: Any of the fresh fish from the tank (cod and striped bass especially), anything in XO sauce (either beef or shrimp and scallops), stuffed chicken (which requires a call a day ahead) and that lovely crab, especially during Dungeness season (December through June).

Fantastic
R and G Lounge has exquisitely prepared and very fresh cuisine for those who appreciate Cantonese cuisine. The food is always consistent, appetizing and reasonably priced. Try the special flat rice noodles, salt and pepper scallops or the famous crab which is to die for.. This is the best Chinese fare in San Francisco..... Don't miss out... Banquets are reasonable too.

Of the 3 places in Chinatown, this ranks 2nd behind Timmy's (Yuet Lee) on Stockton and Broadway. If you order house plates, you will be very satisfied. I personally recommend it.
Chinatown has better to offer
I think R & G loung is clearly over rated. It's over priced for some of the chinese dishes you can find else where for better taste and more authenticity.
A better place to check out is just up 2-3 blocks up the hill, on Clay street, between Stockton and Grant - CAPITAL RESTURANT. Good quality, authentic chinese stir-frys, for the best price possible. Kung Pao Chicken, Beef with Chinese Broccoli, Eggplant or tofu with meat sauce lunch options are served over rice for less than $5 ($4.80 to be exact), all served with soup on the house.
