Some food history archives assert the hot dog was invented in the 1800s by New York Germans who figured a frankfurter worked better on a bun than on bread or a non-edible plate -- probably so. But the casual dining delicacy reached its zenith with the advent of the Chicago-style dog, the one with relish, tomatoes, onions, peppers, celery salt, mustard and pickles. Joey D's is one of the few places around here you can find this monster in all it's authentic glory, and it's definitely the top dog on the cafe's menu. Italian roast beef sandwiches, crisp fries, tasty pizzas, and many other varieties of hot dogs (the chili dog is another star) are also available. You can dine well for about the same cost as at a fast food outlet, but bring cash or your checkbook to pay. Take your feast with you on the road, grab a seat inside amid an abundance of Windy City pro sports paraphernalia or hunker down at one of the fair-weather tables on the patio.
