Benevolent elephants look down from the burnished gold walls of Thai Tom, a hole-in-the-wall in the heart of the University District. Long a favorite with students, prices are so low they scarcely dent even the slimmest of wallets. Flavorful dishes are delivered, steaming, in big banana leaf-shaped bowls, including familiar friends like phad thai, and the house favorite Special Thai Sauce, stir fried with veggies and chicken or beef. The nod for dessert goes to black sticky rice with coconut milk. If you avoid peak dining hours, you'll be more likely to snag one of the 20 or so seats available, either at the bar or on a square stool pulled close to a rustic wood table. (Otherwise, there's always takeout.) Sure, the bar is hotter, but it's fun to watch the cooks dance around the stove and each other. -- Ginny Morey

The service was ok and the food was ok too but, later we all had food poison because our stomaches were turning upside down so, diner beware. I should have known this would happen since we were the only ones in the resturant

  • Good food, good value, worst service

I about fell off my chair when I read bigox's review that states the staff is friendly. Thai Tom's is KNOWN for grudingly poor service, but people go anyway because the food is fresh and good. We discovered the best gyro sandwich in town at Aladin's next door because the wait was ridiculous at Thai Toms. If you want to limit your exposure, order take out!

  • Horrible Service

I have never been to a resturaunt that had had such bad service from the manager and the waitress/waiters. As I spoke to the manager, he stated that "to give good service, he expects something in return." It is amazing, how you can manage to open a resturaunt but do not like serving others freewillingly. The pud thai was geasy, and a bit awkward in taste. Portions are extremely small, and not worth the money that was paid for. The atmosphere is terrible, and what makes it worse is that the resturaunt is small. I would not recommend this resturaunt AT ALL, since there are multitudes of better mouth watering Thai Places well worth your money nearby!

  • Great food, great experience

The seating is scarce, but that only adds to the charm of this tiny, affordable restaurant. The staff is friendly and it is a delight to sit at the bar, a few feet from the grill. Highly recomended and with most dishes less than $6, also a fantastick value.
