The original Chicken Pie Shop was established locally in 1938, and the North Park location has been in place for decades -- lots of decades -- serving up the most consoling of comfort food. You can find mounds of mashed potatoes, the friendly combination of green peas and carrots, cubed Jell-O desserts and steaming chicken pies. You won't find anything gourmet on the menu, just homey food served by friendly waitresses who call you "honey" and "sweetie." You can score a complete meal (chicken pie, mashed taters, veggies, roll, dessert) for under $5. This is part of the Pie Shop's appeal, right along with the courteous service and cheery chicken-themed decor, that you might call retro --every item and fixture could very well have been there since the place opened during WWII.
In addition to chicken pies, other familiar friends are on the menu. Chicken-fried steak, meatloaf, roast beef, turkey sandwiches and chopped salads are just a few of the offerings. The crowd is a mix of seniors, young families and slumming trendsters -- plus, it's a widely held belief in San Diego that nothing fixes the morning-after blahs like a solid dose of Chicken Pie Shop.

San Diego Chicken Pot Pie Shop
I first became acquainted with the "Chicken Pot Pie Shop" (as locals know it) in 1979 when their location was in the Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego. After my first visit, it became a weekly ritual for my family to have lunch or dinner there and on occasion I would take clients there for lunch after inquiring if they would like a good home cooked meal. This ritual continued until 1997 when I retired and moved to lake and hill country of East Texas.
Recently we returned to San Diego to visit children and grandchildren. Topping our list of restaurants to visit was the Chicken Pot Pie Shop. It was our first visit to their El Cajon Boulevard location and I must say, without reservation, nothing had changed. The food was exactly as I remembered it and the portions more than adequate. You cannot beat the price of $6.50 for the quality and portions.
I have eaten at many 5 star restaurants around the world with break the bank prices. Nonetheless, for pure homemade comfort food I highly recommend the San Diego Chicken Pot Pie Shop and for pure comfort food give it a 5 star rating.

MY NEIGHBOR AND I GO TO THE CHICKEN PIE SHOP FOR LUNCH VERY OFTEN. WE LIVE IN YUMA ARIZONA AND TRAVEL TO SAN DIEGO AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH.
MY NEIGHBOR HAS BEEN GOING TO THE SHOP SINCE THE EARLY 1940'S.
THE FOOD IS GREAT BUT THEY ARE TOO STRICT ON ANY SUBSTITUTIONS AND STINGY ON REFILL'S.
THE FRUIT PIES ARE VERY GOOD, MISS THE BLUE BERRY!Sad
IF YOU ENJOY NOISE AND SUB SUB SUB STANDARD SERVICE YOUR AT THE RIGHT PLACE. OUR PARTY ARRIVED AT 6:15 AND WERE SEATED WITHIN A FEW MINUTES, HOWEVER FROM THAT POINT ON IT WAS A MOST UNPLEASANT TIME. WE WATCHED THREE OTHER PARTIES ARRIVE AND BE SEATED ADJACENT TO OUR TABLE. THEIR ORDERS WERE TAKEN AND THEIR FOOD SERVED BEFORE THE WAITRESS EVER ACKNOWLEDGED US OR CAME TO OUR TABLE TO TAKE OUR ORDER. WE MENTIONED THAT WE HAD BEEN SEATED PRIOR TO THOSE 3 PARTIES AND 45 MINUTES HAD PASSED PRIOR TO HER COMING TO OUR TABLE. HER CURT REPLY "I'M VERY BUSY" DID NOT SIT WELL WITH US, HOWEVER WE PLACED OUR ORDER. ANOTHER 17 MINUTES PASSED WHEN SHE RETURNED TO INFORM US "THE LADIES ORDERS CANNOT BE FILLED BECAUSE WE ARE OUT OF THEIR REQUESTED ORDERS". AS IT THEREFORE WAS APPARENT IT WOULD BE ANOTHER LONG PERIOD OF WAIT UNTIL WE WOULD RECEIVE ANY TYPE OF FOOD WE LEFT AND WENT ACROSS THE STREET TO COCO'S WHERE THE SERVICE WAS OUTSTANDING, THE FOOD EXCELLANT AND THE WAITRESS AND MANAGER WERE TRULY PROFESSIONAL IN THEIR "CUSTOMER SERVICE". TRULY AN AWFUL EVENING NOT TO BE REPEATED AND CERTAINLY NOT RECOMMENDED TO ANYONE.
