It's nothing fancy, but The Original Hot Dog Shop is a quintessential Pittsburgh eatery, known among locals as simply "The O." What's the appeal? Simple: hot dogs and fries. These may be the humblest staples of the American diet, but many aficionados agree The O makes them the best. Hot dogs come in a variety of styles -- plain, cheese, cheese and bacon, and kosher-style beef. Condiments include the usual suspects (mustard, relish, onion, pickle and chili and sauerkraut), plus mayonnaise. That leaves the fries. Dollar for dollar, the servings here are huge -- order a small, and you'll have enough for two people. Order a large, and you can feed several families of four. The O also offers a variety of hoagies, salads and pizzas, not to metion a good selection of beers. Perhaps just as important, this spot is open into the wee hours, so your late-night cravings need not go unfulfilled.

The hot dogs at the O run from very good to imitations of the movie theatre hotdog on one of the Sienfeld episodes, depending on your luck, and I suspect on what time you arrive there. My last hotdog at the O was on a Sunday afternoon, but I suspect that it was cooked the night before. The fries have always been great, if anybody does know of a place with better fries in Pittsburgh, I'd love to find out about it. I've noticed a few folks mentioned Primanti Brothers in other reviews. The only explaination I can come up for regarding that place's popularity is that most of the patrons seem to make it a last stop after a full night of partying, when their senses including taste have been deadened by alcohol.
