Architecturally, it's a concrete box with a kitchen in the corner. Gastronomically, you've found the Monticello of the Southwest. When Southern transplants hanker for fried chicken like their grandma used to make, they head to Mrs. White's. Expect to be seated with a smile but not a menu. Instead, look to the walls, where what you see is what you get. Someone has written in thick black marker the meat and side dishes available. The options are as permanent as the marker, so don't bother asking if they're serving grits that day. Your waiter will just point to the nearest wall and tell you to read the list. Not a lot of ambience, not a lot of choices, but come early if you want the best chicken fried steak outside of the Bible Belt. Mrs. White's is a destination spot for the nine-to-five downtown crowd as well as baseball players from nearby Bank One Ballpark, so expect a wait.

This is the real deal! Put away your calorie counter and carb intake guide! Really downhome cooking with the sides you won't find at those chain places. It's busy, so be prepared to wait a little. It's worth it! The blacked-eyed peas are one of my favorites on the side. The fried chicken is good size portions, crispy, and not served in a bucket! I know real down home cooking. My mom was from Kentucky! This is it!
My Favorite Place
I go about once a month. Great fried chicken but the fried pork chops are my favorite. I took my kids there and they love it too. Sweet tea, greens, black eyed peas, yams and rice and gravy round out the menu. I grew up in the South and this is the real deal. You won't be disappointed.
Mrs White ran out of chicken.
On Friday the 13th, my two sisters and I took my Mom out for her birthday to eat there.
Unfortunately at 12 noon they ran out of chicken, which is what we came there for. How do you run out of chicken?
Anyway we settled for the chicken fried steak. We had different sides, the green beans were really good. They remined me of my Grandmas.
The food came hot, which I was surprised at, especially since we had to wait 45 minutes for it.
I don't think I'd go back.
