American fast-food aficionados know that when they pull up to the drive-in window at Mickey D's, they're not leaving with a Le-Bec Fin Happy Meal. And they're fine with that. Such is the case with Hot Tamales. Go in expecting top-of-the-line, authentic Mexican food, and you're going to be one grumpy gringo. But go in looking for a cheap, quickie burrito fix, and all will be right with your world. Hot Tamales has three aces in the hole. One is its location, which makes it crazy popular with the Center City lunch crowd, who often line up out the door for the burritos and other highly Americanized Mexican cuisine. Think Taco Bell, then take a baby step up. The second is the speed in which you get your food -- it's grab and go all the way. The last is its prices, which are low enough to keep interns, new grads and other bottom-rung-of-the-corporate-ladder types well fed and satisfied 'til dinner.

  • not a burrito

sorry, but what i got was not a burrito. yeah it's cheap, but i'd rather pay an extra $2 for a burrito that actually tastes like a real burrito. even though hot tamales is closer , i'd rather walk a few extra blocks to santa fe burrito.

  • Awful service, food not worth

Awful service, it would be one thing if the food was worth it but it's not even that good so I don't know where the attitude in this place comes from. They need to loose the grouch behind the counter who won't let you order what doesn't sound good to her.

  • Not Inexpensive (cheap) at all

By the time you leave the counter your pushing $9-10 for lunch , decent food but expensive for a one off fast food joint !

  • where are the tamales?

come on. you have to head further south of market (or even north to taco riendo) to find good cheap mexican food. the food may be cheap, but in terms of quality, i would rather go across the street to taco bell. they don't even have tamales at this place. it would be like going south of the border and opening a "hotdog johnnies" and only selling hamburgers. wtf.
