Blue Plate Special: Mix-and-match vegetarian, beef, chicken or turkey patties on the large selection of burgers, thick and rich milkshakes and hand-made syrup-flavored sodas.
The Dish: Named after one founder's mom, and the concept of two childhood friends, the first Ruby's Diner opened in Newport Beach, CA, in 1982. Since then, this chain of 1940s- and 1950s-era retro-diners has spread throughout Southern California, Arizona and as far east as New York's Times Square. The restaurant's secret is the old-fashioned menu of hamburgers, milkshakes and sodas, served with a healthy and gleaming dose of nostalgia. Additionally, the menu has bowed to the lower-cholesterol dietary culture of the 21st century and includes modern dishes such as fish tacos, entree salads and veggie burritos.
The Atmosphere: With shiny red leatherette booths, curving chrome lunch counters and lots of red and white tile, Ruby's is sure to trigger the memories of early baby boomers, as well as anyone who ever watched 'Happy Days.' The flexible menu, the vivid retro decor and the fact that each location is designed with wide aisles for energetic kids make these diners popular for multi-generation meals. Ruby's offers discounts to the over-55 set, as well as coloring books and crayons for young scribblers. Also, each Ruby's has nostalgic decor befitting that location. For example, the Ruby's located next to an old Air Force base in Laguna Hills, CA, has mechanical planes flying overhead. -- Kate Edwards

They sure have some good food....
I love eating at Ruby's because they serve the best plates and for something relatively reasonable, one can't really go wrong. I don't often eat there, but when I do, man, I order my favorite plate and it's the burgers with the fries. I may sound like a junk food junkie, but I'm actually not. But Ruby's sure the place to order them besides other great restaurants that serve this.

I lived in Irvine for 12 years and over the last 5 was a constant customer of Ruby's. The personnell were always friendly and smiling. Don't overlook the breakfast menu, as it is substantial and very tasty. The burgers are always dependably good, onion rings are very good, and salads are a delight. The only negative is not about the restaurant but about the out-of-control children that are left undisciplined by parents. Since this is a family restaurant, this is a usual problem, but the food is worth the discomfort of screaming children.
