Don't be fooled by the exterior and decor of this BYO Cuban: Behind its hole-in-the-wall facade lies some seriously fantastic food. Step inside and you're transported to Havana. Sprightly Cuban music pipes through the speakers, and the brightly colored walls are decorated with images of the island. Service is friendly and fast, be it from the long counter or the small number of tables along the side. Seafood is where La Isla really shines. The seafood soup (an array of seafood simmered in a tomato-based fish broth, finished with sherry and cilantro) brings customers from all over, and the coconut-crusted red snapper is a must. Although La Isla doesn't have a liquor license, Sparrow Wine & Liquors, a few doors down, will deliver a bottle of wine or a six-pack right to your table.

La Isla has the most expensive Cuban Food that I have ever seen, and the food isn't that great, either. Take a quick drive up to Union City (10 mins away) there is nice place right on Bergenline and 46th Street called "Pan con Todo" meaning bread with everything, nice clean place, with great food, and even better prices....

  • Simply exquisite!

We are a Cuban-borne couple who have been patrons at La Isla since it first opened. The food is wonderful and consistent. The recipes are authentic (thank you), while many dishes feature innovative specials. Although nobody beats my wife's Cuban cooking (except her mother), we go to La Isla frequently for a nice sit-down dinner at one of the tables, lunch at the counter or even for take-out. We have never been disappointed and the staff is congenial, alert and accomodating.
