Midtown slacker favorite specializes in inexpensive, flavorful meals.

The Scene
This bare-bones, cafeteria-style restaurant draws a crowd of diverse in-towners with its economy dining. Counter service is fast and furious; dishes are prepared while you wait and handed over on plastic trays. Despite this joint's popularity, tables aren't hard to come by in the large space. Ambience is low-key and the furniture smacks of a college dorm.

The Food

The food is as straightforward as its delivery. Counter one offers fresh, semi-made-to-order pasta, including spinach tortellini and a bold-flavored pesto, served with vegetables and meats (try the perfectly steamed broccoli and Italian sausage). Counter two offers a smoky, well-seasoned jerk chicken, served with vegetables or black beans and rice. Choose from a selection of beers, including the pungent, alcohol-free Jamaican ginger beer, or a crisp, brewed iced tea. Finish with a rich, moist brownie.

I love this place. It is spare and spartan and has the feel of a college dining room. The staff look like refugees from a punk concert but the food-- ah, the food. I usually only order pasta but their alfredo sauce is to die for. I wake up at night with cravings for their spinach tortellini with alfedo sauce slatherered with fresh mushrooms. The lasagna is wonderful. The jerk chicken is excellant and won't set your eyeballs a-fire with heat. It is good for the wallet and leaves enough left to go to the bookstore nearby and buy something to enjoy as you digest a satisfying meal. I recommend it to everyone.

My family has been going since before we had my 17 year old son, and before my husband became a vegetarian. Great vegetarian veggies, pasta, garlic bread, lemon pepper chicken, etc. Great prices, good portion, and one of the few places where a family of 3 can eat well for less than $25 and not still be hungery!
