Hallowed ground for West Hollywood locals, The Abbey is a beacon of entertainment and social acceptance that transcends its bar and restaurant identity. Once just a coffeehouse with a Gothic theme, The Abbey has remodeled, renovated and morphed to become a focal point of West Hollywood life, by day and by night. Depending on the time, The Abbey can be a simple coffeehouse and bakery or a hot nightclub and bar scene attracting lines of patrons. Building on its coffeehouse base, owner David Cooley slowly expanded to include an outdoor bar, cabana lounge, dance floor and the decadent new Ice Bar, which features cathedral ceilings and a sultry lounge. Be sure to check out the martini offerings here, which include the Butterfinger, the Caramel Apple, the Chocolate Raspberry and the seasonally appropriate Pumpkin Pie. Even with the changes, the Gothic theme that longtimers have come to love remains intact.

The transition from coffee and baked goods by day to nightly dinner and dancing can't be easy, but this place does it with aplomb. Rated "Best Restaurant of 2003" by the city of West Hollywood, the Abbey is known for catering to the late-night dining demands of the local gay community. The food is well-prepared, ranging from fun finger foods like nachos, quesadillas and burgers, to lighter chicken, pasta and vegetarian faire. Whether enjoying a late lunch with friends or gushing down a Martini at last call, the Abbey is a gay nightlife experience that epitomizes LA bar life for millions of residents and visitors.

  • A Nightmare

    Review rating : 1out of 5   nowo38 - 04/25/2007

Me nd my friends had a bad experience at the Abbey. If Abbey wants to stay in business, whoever owns it should make sure staff are friendly. It just ruins the ambiance of the place. Drinks are pricey and do not really have that much of a difference to any other bar out there.

  • I had a birthday party there

    Review rating : 5out of 5   drummer17matt - 03/25/2007

Yeah so like last year I came out to LA for my birthday to see my cousin (were a tight family) and He was like some of my friends would like to meet you so I arranged a birthday party for you at my favorite bar the abbey. So we went at like 2 on a sunday afternoon. By 10PM i was toasted from great drinks (carmel apple about 8 of them plus some shot people kept buying me) and it was nutz. I"ve never seen so many people and had so much fun. The only thing i can really remember now, other than dancing and meeting lots of hot chicks, was this crazy light above the bar. Check this place out!

  • New Bartenders hate Gays

    Review rating : 1out of 5   curttruman - 01/09/2007

The new Bartenders the Abbey are awlful. One tried to beat me and my friend up. This Bartender was so new he didn't know how to make a drink. I had to tell him and then I reached over and put to limes in the drinks...........he freaked out and started yealling....and said. "I don't touch the pencils on your desk don't touch my bar."... He looked really hung over...my freind said " let's get out of here before he beats us up." I recommend the HERE were the Bartenders are friendly and don't threaten the customers.

  • HORRIBLE FOOD, HIGH PRICES

    Review rating : 1out of 5   nursejim45 - 10/07/2006

It's difficult to see what all the hoopla is about. The food is the nothing short of horrible. I got the NY strip steak. I've had bigger steaks at a Waffle House, and I'm not exaggerating. It was tough and full of gristle. It came with a side of instant soupy mashed potatoes and frozen vegetables. The calamari was lacking any seasoning whatsoever, and had been overcooked in oil that was long overdue to be changed.

I had 2 double well drinks and my friend had a well martini and some house specialty drink. This came to $55 before tip. That seems a bit pricey to me even for Hollywood.

Yes the ambience is nice, but $10 to park and over $100 for a couple drinks and the worst meal I've ever had, makes me think this place is nothing more than a tourist trap.

Shame on you for reccomending it!!!

  • RE: Great by Day

    Review rating : 4out of 5   nicolleee909 - 09/06/2006

Last time I checked the Abbey was a public place, not just for Gay folk. The music is good and the drinks are perfect if you know how to tip.

  • Great by day..not by night

    Review rating : 3out of 5   la1funk - 05/27/2006

The Abbey is fabulous to meet friends during the day for lunch and cocktails...however, the nightly "club scene" is just that...a "scene" with too many non-gay folk. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good cocktail and have many straight friends...however, it seems as if this place has been "taken over"...from the ridiculous bartenders to the over cooked-over done patrons.

  • Not All It's Cracked Up To Be

For the life of me what is all the fuss about? ICandy is far superior to this joint.
