One would never think that this unassuming roadhouse hidden away in the leafy confines of O'Neil Regional Park has hosted dignitaries like Richard Nixon (who was a regular), but it's true -- Trabuco Oaks is elegant enough to host leaders of the free world, yet homey enough for a family dinner. What brings these two elements together? It's most likely the simplicity of the menu and the unaffected cowboy decor. The menu consists mostly of top-shelf cuts of steak: porterhouse, filet mignon and extra thick cuts of top sirloin. Everything is grilled over a mesquite wood fire pit so there's a distinct flavor that most steakhouses lack, but the chefs tend to cook on the rare side (so if you like medium-well, opt for well done). The sides are just as hearty: baked potatoes the size of small footballs and garlic bread practically a meal in itself. Leave the necktie at home though. In an effort to keep the homey western atmosphere, the wait staff has orders to take scissors to anyone wearing a tie -- even Nixon's is on display in the foyer.

Very Disappointed
Unique setting - like a road house with concrete floors; pay PRIME grade prices for CHOICE grade steaks. Tables were cramped together; service was no better than a burger joint or sports bar; food quality (salads, sides, garlic bread) was very poor at best. We were surprised they'd been able to survive on high prices with such mediocrity. Very disappointed. Don't waste your time or money.

Every time AOL rates the various "Best Of", I submit my suggestion that Trabuco Oaks has the best steak I have ever eaten in a restaurant. I have been eating there for two decades, and the only thing that has changed is the normal inflation of prices...the steak is still the same "melt in your mouth" quality seasoned and cooked to perfection variety that I have been touting for seven years on AOL. I know the above "overview" talks about the football size baked potatoes, but Trabuco Oaks Steakhouse makes the very best french fries too. If you are a french fry "nut" like me, you may want to consider fries over a baked potato, at least on one of your visits there...and I'm guessing you will be coming back again and again; I know I do.
