Way out in the mercilessly hot flatlands of the San Gabriel Valley, wedged between nondescript strip malls and apartment complexes, is a pizza place that has managed to retain the spirit and quality of the Big Apple for half a century. In fact, some people go one step further and claim that this restaurant serves Los Angeles' closest approximation of Sicilian-style pizza. Brick oven-baked and served by the slice, small pie, medium pie or square, it's undeniably tasty, even though you can't stumble over and grab a slice on your way home from the night clubs. Other than Petrillo's Specialty (everything on it) and Petrillo's Pizza Bianca, there aren't any specialty pies, but you can build your own from a standard list of toppings. Pasta dinners and veal, eggplant or chicken parmigiana round out the menu offerings.

The dining room is quite pleasant, though it looks like the decor hasn't been updated since the restaurant opened in 1954. Separate but adjacent is a takeout window with a few seats -- the only option available at lunch. The striped awning outside is tattered but still cheerful. -- Lena Katz

Pizza, lasagna, pasta, fun foods for the family that never fail IF they are well done. Petrillo's has been providing really tasty dishes for a long time because people keep coming back for more. The customers don't go for the free street parking, fancy service or decor they go because they feel welcome and well served their expectations are met. Cheesey pizza, bountiful plates of past and fresh bread. So much better than Chuckie...without the animatronics Wait service can be overwhelmed sometimes but I don't mind waiting for the meals they serve. Their pizza is their signature dish and deserves accolades. How long have they been at that location? I don't but I hope they continue to providefine food and fair prices.

  • Surpassing all expectations!!

    Review rating : 5out of 5   krixsteexnuh - 07/05/2008

This is the best pizza in town. This pizza is prepared old style with a ton of cheese and quality toppings, par excellence.
The salad is served cool, crisp, and fresh. It includes several types of lettuce, Romaine being the most dominant, tomato, pepperchinni peppers, and garbanzo beans. This salad is topped off with their classic balsamic vinaigrette, which is very light and exquisite.
The baked lasagna is served bubbling hot and is topped with delicious layers of cheese. This is one luscious dish.
The bread is served in a basket. The bread is so fresh and soft, and it is served with individual butter pats. Their bread is very scrumptious.
The on draft beer is server ice cold in a frozen heavy glass pitcher as to keep it ice cold.
This restaurant is well staffed with cashiers, host/hostesses, and at least four waiters at four p.m.
The staff is friendly and quick to refill a glass of water or deliver more bread. I never have to wait even a minute for a response. It is very satisfying.
The bathrooms are the cleanest bathrooms that I have ever seen in a restaurant.
I have visited this restaurant twice in the last two weeks, and my family and I are going again tonight. I can hardly wait. This is definitely my new favorite restaurant, and it never deceives my expectations.
