Tommy's Joynt does two things well: meat and beer. The hofbrau's menu, featuring braised lamb shanks, oxtail and corned-beef sandwiches, looks like it hasn't changed since Tommy's opened in 1947. The prices also hearken back to days of yore: A huge dinner, with meat, salad, mashed potatoes and a roll, is under $10 -- even with a beer.

Tommy's adheres to the more-is-merrier philosophy in everything, from its loud outside murals to the parallel walls with food on one side and drinks on the other. Everything on the extensive menu is served cafeteria-style, and there are as many misses as hits. Go for the tender brisket sandwich, and say "yes" to the offer of tangy, thin barbecue sauce. If you're curious, pass on the too-beefy buffalo stew and opt instead for the mild buffalo chili.

As with food, so with drink. Tommy's serves some hundred beers from around the world, and most are cheap. Amuse yourself by looking at the beer signs, sports logos and old menu specials plastered on the walls, or watch sports on satellite TV in the back room. The cafeteria stays open until 2AM, making Tommy's a filling last stop on any bar crawl. -- Julie Ross

I was told about this place by Chris a conductor at one of the SF cable cars. The food is SUPER and the portions are HUGE. The Margaritas just loaded and balance. Prices very reasonable. SF has the Golden Gate, Cable Cars and TOMMY'S JOYNT.

I love this place . I spent many late nights at the joint throwing back some brews and putting away the corndbeef sandwich. I have moved back to hawaii my home of birth but whenever I go to the bay area I always make a pit stop at tommys. aalways worth the trip.

Honestly, I did not enjoy myself here. Food was so so, not much better than a diner. Eh...

  • My number one place!

Tommy's is the best period! Saturdays they have Sweet&Sour Spareribs that simply melt in your mouth. They also make great drinks.

There is nothing about this place that is worthwhile. The food is bland and overpriced. The service is rude and the neighborhood is full of crackheads, prostitutes and hyper-aggressive panhandlers. STAY AWAY from this restaurant and this neighborhood!

I've only been there twice. The first time my son and I stumbled on the place as walking tourist. The second time we went looking for it. The food is good, the prices are great, and the atmosphere reminds me of some old bars I've encountered in the village. I'll definatly be back.

  • one of the last real san francisco treats

i luv tommy's joynt! i moved here about 20 years ago, and it is one of the few icons that remains intact. the food is plentiful, homemade taste and cheap, the atmosphere is loud and busy, and the decor kinda tacky, but that's why it's so san franciscan... it's just a 'fun' place to go to! hope it stays here for a long time!

  • Tommy's Saloon lives

    Review rating : 5out of 5   gunny33 - 02/26/2005

Tommy's has been a class San Francisco throwback Saloon for ages. Good everything! Many a night as a full time student back in the 60's & 70's I'd split a sandwich and raid the self serve pickel barrel. When we had $$ tried drinking around the world.
