This family-owned place most likely had the first wood-fired pizza oven in the Bay Area two generations ago. To start, ask for the marinated roasted peppers, glistening string beans or whatever vegetables are in season-never have vegetables tasted brighter. And order a bowl of vinegar-accented steamed "coo coo" clams for the table. Then get serious with pizzas and calzones from the wood-fired oven. A light house red wine is served in ceramic pitchers.

Favorite SF Dining Experience
I researched dining opportunities for my first trip to SF and decided Tommaso's was a must do after reading rave reviews on many differnent sites. We were not dissapointed. We dined there on our first evening in town and were treated like royalty! The food and the service was perfect in every way. My daughter and I split lasagna and a small pizza. The sauce, fresh pasta, and spices utilized made the lasagna superb and the crust, fresh garlic, and fresh spices made us try very hard to consume every bite of the pizza. Not possilbe!!! We finished up our meal with tiramisu which was creamy and flavorful. Needless to say, the restaurant choice for the next eveing did not even compare in service, flavor, or quality so we returned for our last evening meal. We were seated on the end of the long tables down the center of the restaraunt and were at first dissapointed not to be seated at one of the 8 or nine cozy booths along the sides. Little did we know that we had been seated at the best spot in the house! Our view of the oven and the wonderful Italian family interactions made our dining experience priceless. We were totally transformed into Italy! Don't miss this wonderful experience of fabulous food and family!
Add CommentLupo's Reincarnated

I was a patient at Letterman Army Hospital in 1954 when a friend of mine snuck a Lupo's wood fired oven cheese pizza by the nurses. I have been hooked on these marvelous pies ever since. The change to Tommasso's about 1973 did not change the quality.

By far the finest thin crust wood-fired pizza in San Francisco: nowhere else are all the ingredients (cheese, sauce, toppings) so perfectly melded (vs. tossed on & half-cooked). The simple margharita (tomatoe & cheese) pizza with herbs is so good it needs nothing else. Orgasmic....
Bay Area's Best of the Best
Every time I visit Tommaso's is an excellent gastranomic experience. Augustino feeds us like family.
I have a group of fellow businessmen who come to town every other month for a meeting. They always insist I take them "to see Augustino at Tommaso's." The food is superb. The treatment is fabulous. The feeling you leave with is priceless. They truly make you feel at home.

start w/ a plate of truly stellar marinated vegetables- IF you can decide between broccoli, toasted peppers, asparagus, garbanzo beans. but why decide? have a few- and a salad! TRY not to eat too much of the seductively warm, crusty bread because you have to save room for pizza. oh, the pizza. the kind of classic, perfectly executed pizza that dreams are made of. just enough of a crust to sink your teeth into but not too thick -and not too crackery-thin, topped w/ just the right amount of top-rate ingredients. our favorites? mushroom- or anchovy- or sliced italian sausage- or clam and garlic. what? youre not in the mood for pizza? howabout the luscious, bechamel-laden lasagna bolognese? linguine w/ clams (red sauce or white), veal parmagiana w/ a side of rigatoni? but wait- thats not all! wonderful italian wines, locally made spumoni or cannoli- all of this while basking in the warmth of the lovely napolitano family who have owned tomasso's for the past 20+ years. and somehow it just gets better and better.
