While a true-blue American burgers-and-fries joint within a fancy-pants food haven may seem novel, the concept has been done before -- by the same restaurant. The original Taylor's is in St. Helena, a tiny Napa Valley town where the fryers have been going since 1949. In 1999, new proprietors added a few gourmet touches (including local wine), and the joint snagged press as a great antidote to fussy, fancy food.

The concept doesn't translate perfectly to the Ferry Building, which is more of a pedestrian affair, but that doesn't mean it's not a well-appreciated addition to the neighborhood (if the lines snaking out the door at lunchtime are any testament). The place finds a formula for success in a fun mix of down-home (American cheese, corn dogs, cafeteria-yellow sponge buns, reasonable prices) and high-end (all-natural beef, ice cream-thick milkshakes, daily homemade soup and specials like duck confit tacos). If it's warm out, skip the cutesy '50s decor inside and head to the patio to people-watch and enjoy a drink.

I've been going there sence 1964 it was great then good food not much for lines. Now you all have found it and it's get in line. This is good for them but not for me.The lines in Napa and Saint Helena are fairly long but once you get to the front it doesn't take that long to get your food and it's worth the wait.. I used to have to drive from Napa to Saint Helena and now I can get it here less driving more waiting but worth it.

I've been to the St. Helena location several times and if you want not just A burger, but THE BURGER, there is no better. Being able to chow down by the PIers on a cool, sunny day....or a cold foggy one, is the perfect City meal! The fires are great, but the onion rings are KILLA! And compared to a lot of other places in The City, the tab is not unreasonable! Go there!

That is how they make it, as ordered! I have also walked in wanting a burger and found other good alternatives on the menu. They were so tempting I changed my taste buds mind! I tried a great berry shake there once and it was great. I tried to order it another time and they were out of the berry one, so I guess others like it just as well as I. On a nice day, it is great to sit outside.
If you want to pay more and are very hungry, try the Hard Rock and some Jerrry Garcia wine while watching the TV!

  • VERY NICE!!!

I have driven past the St. Helena one, but had recently experienced the one in the Ferry Bldg. Besides at a beautiful location the ahi tuna burger with asian slaw was the bomb! I also enjoy their sweet potato fries, and it's great to wash that down with a glass of white wine.

  • Wait Wait Wait...

Not only did they mess up my order, but they also refused to replace their wrong order with what I had really ordered. Besides the fact that they forced me to eat something I didn't order the service was sub-par at best and the burger I had was undercooker (Med Rare - at best). The food wasn't worth the money, the service wasn't worth my company, and the restaurant wasn't worth my time. Don't eat here unless you have to.

Not as quaint as the original in St. Helena, but never the less a fun place to go. About as close to American Graffiti as you are going to get. Great burgers and the milkshakes are to die for!
