Inner Sunset's fog is a great excuse to go to Park Chow; its brick walls, heated patios and hearty plates will warm you up, though it's too crowded to be cozy. Have a drink near the fireplace while you wait for the quiet upper deck (the downstairs room and front patio are equally pretty, but much louder). The staff doesn't take reservations, and there will be a wait after 7PM. But all the hassle is made up for by food that's fantastic for the price.

There's a daily pasta and a couple of Asian dishes, but the best stuff's straightforward American: tender short ribs, tri-tip steak, Cobb salad. The steak and a fabulous hamburger (both made with grass-fed beef) come with skinny, crunchy shoestrings that rival the frites in any bistro. There's plenty for kids, who are quite welcome here.

The wine list is affordable, but minimal -- better options live on the beer list, including Belgian Chimay. Or go for fresh-squeezed lemonade or good coffee, which pairs well with excellent desserts like flaky apple pie and rich ginger cake with pumpkin ice cream and caramel sauce, which has attained legendary status among regulars. -- Julie Ross
