Japanese cuisine and whisky? Believe it or not, the combination works, especially when packaged in a sleek, dark, dot.com-era loft, transformed with fire-glow, white rock floors and exposed brick walls. This spot is so hip that you might expect to spot Bill Murray toasting Scarlett Johanssen a la 'Lost in Translation.' Nihon boasts more than 120 whiskies, 80 of them single malt. If you buy a bottle you're allowed to dine in the sexy, pillowed "private room" and your bottle is stored for future visits.

The menu is sophisticated, modern Japanese with offerings like tuna carpaccio, the Kobe beef burger wrapped in seaweed, and freshwater popcorn crab -- tiny little tikes you pop into your mouth whole. You'll want to order many of these small-portion small plates, so stop by the ATM before showing up for your reservation. And although the chi-chi cuisine is served in the Izakaya style of Japanese casual, party-dining, don't show up in your sweats and flip-flops. Wear your club-hopping best and plan to taxi in and out. This part of Folsom is a lonely place if you're hoofing it.
