This cute little breakfast, brunch and lunch place with red awnings is tucked into the bottom floor of a classic San Francisco Victorian. While the lines on weekend mornings are down the block, a tasty, affordable meal is your reward. Just get a cup of coffee at a North Beach coffee shop, grab the paper or check out the tai chi participants in Washington Square Park.

The deal here is this: you order at the counter and then look for a seat. Staff holds fast to this rule, so make sure your entire party has ordered before grabbing a table. If you can, it's wise to check out the menu and specials board while you're still in line. You can watch the cooks at the griddle while you order -- no doubt a plot to whet your appetite.

Staples include fluffy three-egg "m' omelettes" filled with fancy ingredients like fontina cheese, pancetta and Ortega chilies; and chocolate-cinnamon French toast topped with strawberries. Daily specials include freshly baked breads, egg dishes, quiche, sandwiches and salads. Mama's serves a perfectly crisp Monte Cristo sandwich. Late risers need not worry -- breakfast is served all day. -- Ana Schwartzman

  • Never miss Mama's for breakfast...

    Review rating : 5out of 5   PAPAJOHNOKC - 07/10/2008

I have been visiting San francisco at least twice a year since 1989..That was the year that I discovered Mama's.. We are in the City for at least two weeks every year and eat at Mama's 7 or 8 times.. Ity is an easy bus ride from the Union Street area that we live in.. I have tried everything on the menu at least once and have never been disapointed..

Looking forward to more visits in August while there..

  • Mamma Mia!

    Review rating : 5out of 5   TLSEE72 - 05/30/2008

Breakfast just doesn't get better then this! First of all, this place is unique because it is a good ol' neighborhood establishment. The owner/chef's family has ties way back to North Beach. The atmosphere here is vibrant and festive. The wait staff was very friendly as were the people sitting next to us. It is worth comming in just for the coffee and a pastry. I tried the omeletes and french toast...delicious! Everything is served with fresh ingredients and served hot unlike some places where you can tell your order has been sitting there forever. This place is not to be missed when you are visiting San Francisco. Note: The first time that I went to Mama's there was no wait at all! Then again it was a Monday around 11:30 AM. If you are a late sleeper or enjoy a brunch, you may be in luck and miss the long lines. Once you come here, then you will understand why it is so crowded! Bon Appetite!

Eureka! I have finally found it; the best breakfast on earth. I almost feel like they put something in the food that is addictive. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone and for those who didn't like it, lighten up.

  • terrible customer service!

    Review rating : 1out of 5   mmorales13 - 07/14/2006

I'm a City native. My relatives were in town, and thought it was a good idea to take them here, since I only heard great things about the place. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype! The service was terrible! The hostess wasn't very friendly, but I shrugged it off, thinking that she was probably having a bad day. My party kind of took a while to place our orders - I mean, there were 7 of us - what did they expect? In addition, we weren't familiar with how to order, since it was our first time there. What made me totally upset was that I actually caught 2 of the waiters looking @ us and laughing!!! We should have left right then and there - my mistake! The food wasn't that bad, but the service made me lose my appetite. I asked to speak to the manager to complaint about how bad the service was. Yes he apologized, but I didn't think he cared. If you expect good customer service, I suggest you go somewhere else.

  • Cute

Came here during a visit to SF because i'd read that it was a great place for breakfast.. the place is tiny.. so luckily we got there early and nabbed a great corner table. They have a whole shelf lined with all kinds of tempting coffee cakes, muffins, and breads. I had the banana pancakes which were fluffy buttermilk pancakes with fresh banana slices on top and powdered sugar. Overall, presentation was cute but there honestly was nothing special about them.. they're small, and i prefer dinner plate-sized portions. The fruit is really fresh (come to think of it.. ALL the fruit i had in SF was great! Must be a Nor Cal thing.) and i would give the bran muffins an 8 out of 10!! They're yummy and dense, and have the cool squared tops (personal preference), instead of the usual round. The rest of the menu items looked really tempting, but unfortunately we didnt get a chance to go back. Will definitely come back again the next time im in SF!

Mamas is the best place for breakfast in San Francisco!!! The food is fresh and prepared in full view.. Sometimes tasty homemade breads and treats are handed out while you wait in line to order.. yummm.. everyone is so friendly and helpful... which i am thankful for because its so difficult to decide what to order with so many wonderful things available on the menu... but, trust me.. you can't go wrong.. what ever you get will be heavenly.. Oh.. and while you are in line check out the beautiful art hanging on the walls. the beautiful paintings are for sale.. and these little heart's make wonderful gifts.. if you can part with them.. aaahhaah.. go see for yourself.

why oh WHY is Mama's not in aol's SF top 10 breakfast list?? French toast straight from heaven, cute decor. I had the Pan D'or -- thin strips of french toast w/ sliced apples and a lemon cream sauce -- every biteful was heaven. If you don't want to wait on line for a table, try playing hooky for a weekday late breakfast there.
