Dottie's is indeed true blue, an island of homey, first-class cooking in a marginal Tenderloin neighborhood. Sadly, it is not a secret anymore, as evidenced by the smiles on the faces of the people snaking down Jones Street as they wait in line to get inside for breakfast. Dottie's bakes its own scones, pastries, breads and muffins, and even makes its own chipotle pepper jelly.

House favorites are the fantastic blueberry cornmeal pancakes, served with real maple syrup; French toast made from homemade white bread drenched in heavy cream; and the black bean cakes, which are a kind of vegetarian sausage patty, served with homemade salsa, grilled corn bread, eggs and potatoes. The coffee is great, too, and you can get a cappuccino or latte. Did we mention the pancakes already? They're downright addictive. Dottie's, with its blue checked tablecloths and special homespun vibe, is the breakfast place to take your special friends, and lunch is almost as good.

  • best omelette in town and THEN there's all the other stuff!

At first I loved Darla's in the Inner Sunset, and still do, but then I had Dottie's breakfast and was even more wowed. There's a long line, but boy is it worth it. They have marvelous eggs, pancakes and other amazing things I haven't begun to order. It's only a block away from me, so I have no excuse not to go back and try them all. Okay, maybe the line keeps me from heading there once a week, but it really is worth it.

  • Well worth the 1hr wait

The small eating areas are a bit tight and it is definitely busy. The inside surroundings are old and nostalgic and remind me what cafes were like many years past. I LIKE THAT! All the food was excellent , judging by all the happy faces at their tables. I recommend add the french toast to any of their entree as it is the best i have ever tasted. Im in Frisco one weekend a year and Dotties is the one place I always go to for saturday breakfest. Note sundays the line is always longer

  • DOTTIE'S IS THE BEST

    Review rating : 5out of 5   dolphdiver - 02/22/2007

My girlfriend and I just got back from San Francisco and we ate at Dottie's twice, first time we got in, in about 15 minutes and sat at counter, second time on a sunday, we stood on line for about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Both times it was well worth the wait. Dotties is The BEST BREAKFAST any where in the world, and we have both traveled all over the world. Dotties is a must when in San Francisco. Doors open at 730am, be there around that time.

  • the best breakfast in SF

My husband travels all over the world as a musician and he says Dotties has the best breakfast of any where he has been! He will even wait in line to have a meal there...something he would ordinarily NEVER do....

This place is great. When I visit S.F. I always have breakfast there. More than once if possible.

  • I agree... Dottie's is best!

I was told to have breakfast at Dottie's the first trip I made to San Francisco. I did and I have eaten there each trip since. The dining area is small, so, if you don't want wait, I advise getting there before the doors open. The neighborhood is a bit dicey, but it is worth overlooking once you try the food. The food is excellent, the portions are more than ample, and the service is superb! I think it's the best breakfast in the United States. And with the Camellia Grill in New Orleans still closed after the hurricane, a close competitor is hard to find. Jake in Connecticut.

  • I lived across the street

    Review rating : 5out of 5   tomsaltsman - 04/14/2006

Fro 1989 to 1997, I lived across the street from Dottie's and had breakfast there many times. I was never disappointed except to see the long lines that form about 9am. I never ordered anything at Dottie's that I didn't enjoy thoroughly; it was always a real treat. From the coffee to the fried potatoes to the black bean cakes, everything was always done to perfection and with great imagination. (For example, note the varying salt and pepper shaker collection on each table.)

This is a great place for breakfast. Unique items on the menu such as their black bean cakes and the big combo breakfasts like the True Blue Special serve up big portions of tasty treats. You should try it. And, FYI the suggestion to go to Han's Breakfast is way off. Not near the quality of food or service as at Dottie's.
