The touristy Cliff House underwent a two-year remodeling project to unveil its centerpiece, Sutro's: a dramatically modern two-story room with a wall of glass looking out to ocean and wind-blasted cypress trees. But the addition makes sense. The intricate ceiling's metal beams recall the old ceiling of the Sutro Baths, a turn-of-the-century swimming palace that was part of Playland-by-the-Sea, a long-gone but still-treasured amusement park that once lived on this shore.
The kitchen at Sutro's also mixes the new with the retro. Though it's still based on the tourist-pleasing notion of "San Francisco seafood," the menu is hardly old school. Organic ingredients and barrier-crossing flavors rule the day. Go for organic Thai beef salad, Liberty duck sloppy joes or a version of Greek dolmades filled with faro and wild mushrooms. Cliff House has always had a pretty good wine list for a tourist joint -- now it has pretty good food to go along with it.
Note: The Cliff House's offers a more casual eatery called The Bistro, opened daily from 9AM to 9:30PM.

Poor
The food is not good and the service is poor but the view is beautiful.
Nothing like a great glass of apple martine or wine, cheese, fruit at sunsetAdd Commentso-so
There's a beautiful view, yes, but the food isn't very tasty. Defintely do not order the meatloaf!
I wonder why Empress of China isn't on this list... it has a gorgeous view of China Town and has amazing food, plus little fish tanks in the windows with the city lights glowing behind them. What was old is new again

We spent our wedding anniversary here and made a reservation right before sunset. What a view! It's the kind of view that makes you realize how lucky we are to live near such beauty. It didn't start that way though, when I walked up here from down the hill I was shocked at the exterior but once we opened the doors I was overwhelmed by the size and views. The food was good, not the greatest but worth the drive and definitely worth the money. This is the restaurant that defines a moment in life, don't waste it.
Eyesore
They turned a warm wonderful San Francisco landmark into a cold sterile steel eyesore! Let the tourists have it all the time, locals know the food was never a stong point, the atmosphere was where it was at!
WOW...WHAT A FACELIFT!!!

We love the new look! Granted the old CLIFF was charming, but now there's another reason to go... GREAT FOOD... make sure you find your way downstairs to their second restaurant SUTROS' for a delicious meal, beautiful views, and friendly, unpretentious service. Really surprised at how reasonable drink prices were too... a martini in this city for $6.50!?!? Be sure to spend some time at the bar... nothing like a great glass of wine at sunset...
A San Francisco Travesty
The old Cliff House was a San Francisco Treasure. It harkened back to a time when Ocean Beach was on the outskirts of th city surrounded by sand dunes. You felt the spirit of a San Francisco that rose like a phoenix from the 1906 earthquake.
The food was upscale while the surroundings welcomed casual beach walkers or upscale diners. The wall were covered with autographed pictures of famous celebrities and the decor was warm, wood floors and brass railings.
It was the perfect spot for a drink and appetizers after an invigorating walk on the beach or an ideal destination to take out of town guests as an alternative to North Beach or Fisherman's Wharf.
The new version is a tourist trap travesty. The once sweeping views up Ocean Beach have been totally lost. The staff is snooty. The prices are unaffordable and the food is only passable.
This earthquake "retrofit" has irrevocably deprived San Francisco of a cherished landmark and replaced it with a cold, overpriced edifice which could be placed in anytown USA.
EI JemersonUNGRACIOUS SERVICE
The restaurant is expensive, so I imagined that the service would be refined, or at the very least adequate but do not go if you want to have quality service. I requested a table, by the window, with a view upon making the reservation. I was told that it was impossible to guarantee this which I did understand. When we arrived there was no window table available so we were seated in the middle of the room. About five minutes after we were seated a window seat became available so we asked to be moved. The maitre d'hotel came and YOU WILL NOT BELEIVE THIS....He said "Well.........EVERYONE wants window seats...your service has already started (which was water) and anyway, its a different servers area (as if this were my problem). He did not have the refiend answer of a impeccably trained Maitre de that would have said "Madam, I am soooooo sorry that I cannot move you now because your orders have been placed...let me guarantee a table on your next visit, or .....let me offer you all a coffeee, or drinks...whatever.." NO apology, just rude Maitre de....DEFINITELY NOT SOMEWHERE TO TAKE GUESTS, OR FOR ENTERTAINING BUSINESS GUESTS AND WANT TO SPEND SOME MONEY, FOR QUALITY SERVICE.
