Blue Plate Special: Mexican breakfasts (e.g., machaca), California burrito

The Dish: Santana's has been a San Diego favorite for years, with the older locations making a name for the restaurant across the county. Like so many down-home taquerillas in the San Diego area, Santana's has a menu that's rounded out by burritos, chimichangas and, of course, tacos. The main draw though is the California burrito, filled to the brim with just about everything they could think to wrap in a tortilla, including french fries. There are no frills and no "traditional" costumes, just good, old-fashioned tacos and burritos. You come to Santana's for the food, and you leave glad that you came. Granted, you're moving a little slower when you do leave, because you're so stuffed, but that's what comfort food is all about. They're open 24 hours, so come by in the morning for machacca, or a breakfast burrito.

The Atmosphere: Santana's isn't known for its classy imported decor, mostly because there is none. They specialize in walk-up, drive-through, eat 'n' enjoy service. Each location moves into a building and makes it uniquely "Santana's." Whether that means a quaint, south-of-the-border look, such as the one on Midway, or a gaudy purple and orange motif such as the Rosecrans location, you're drawn in, and leave full and happy.

  • A MUST to try

We go to Santanas at least once a month although the location is a bear to park in. The Carne Asada burrito is awesome and the sauces and the grilled onions in the salsa bar are exceptional. My goal someday is to have as much salsa as I can eat, it is that good. We take out of towners there to show them what can be done to carne asada with the fixings.

I would have never thought french fries in a burrito would be good, but it's amazing. It was the first stop from the airport (upon reccomendation) and made a few more visits while in town. I wish they would open up in Chicago.

  • A Navy tradition

With the Rosecrans location being right down the road from base, many Navy personnel are often seen eating there from recruits to officers!
The food here is awesome, friendly service, wide variety of salsas and some of the best bang for the buck! Very recommended!
